  • Eight dogs and M.E. – blog by Fiona Nicholson

    Regular readers will recognise Fiona as a valuable commentator on posts on Podenco Post. In March she undertook to move from Scotland to Western France with her 8 dogs. They are all settling in, although finding the contrast of the French summer temperatures somewhat different from those in Scotland.

  • Portuguese podengos looking for forever homes

    Portugal parents 250 6 2015Here is a lovely story from Dineka in Portugal, about a lucky Portuguese podengo family.

    ‘On the 7th of May I saw two Podengos running on the road, both skinny to the bone, one male and one female. Stopped and gave them water and food, and the female obviously had puppies recently.

    She was approachable, but the male was too scared, and ran off. It was already late afternoon, so I took the female to the vet, checked for a chip, and she belongs to a hunter nearby. But he didn’t bother reporting her as missing.

    It turned out she had Microfilaria, anaemia and Tic-fever, and I left her ate the vet that night. Next morning I picked her up, put her on the leash where I found her, and she took me directly to a hollow tree, where she had hidden 5 puppies.

  • From Perrera to Finca Podenco Friends, Murcia – meet Perla

    Bev Farmer tells the story of Perla.

    Perla arrived on Friday 35d July 2015 and we have given her some space but yet another Podenca terrified out of her mind. This is not fear from a change of circumstances, this is from a deeply rooted sustained abuse of some type. She will need many months of help and support to break her out of this world of terror she lives in.

    In the last 3 months we have taken in 5 podencos all very similar issues and it cant be just because they are nervous by nature. Dogs learn by association the positive and the negatives and if treated badly for long enough, establish what hurts them is to be avoided.

    For everyone who generously gave to our appeal to fund vet fees for Podenco Bud and Moreno, with Podenco Friends in Murcia, here’s a lovely video from Bev Farmer. Sit back and enjoy.

    Buds Story…. handed into a perrera by a hunter with the explanation he had been feeding him but thought he was sick and that is why he was so emaciated. We took him into our care and blood tests revealed a different explanation, long term malnutrition, severe anemia. This is not an isolated case, many of the Podencos we rescue come to us in this condition.

    I ask please share this video and let the world see what happens to many of the Podencos in Spain, for them its their reality Bud was lucky we got him to us in time watch the video although sad to begin with….. see the magic unfold

  • Foster home urgently needed for Podenco x Aaron

    Pepis Aaron 250 6 2015Please can we find a foster home urgently for pod x Aaron. He is one of over 80 dogs at Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera Seville. Another one dumped at the gates – it happens on a regular basis…dogs come in quicker than can be homed!!

    Here’s what Jane Brian says.
    ‘I wonder if you can help with little guy? I have him living with us in the mobile home and I really don’t want to put him in the refuge.

    He is an amazing puppy, very intelligent and obedient.

    We estimate that Aaron is around five months. He is house trained to a point, he does his big business outside, but still does wee wee inside, he hasn’t grasped that concept as yet.’

  • Podencos Clooney and Callum – pups at play

    Roxys two boys were born in the campo amazingly even with such a bad start in life they are really social. Their mum is a Podenco Campanero and these seem to have her laid back attitude. Both are vaccinated, passport and negative for med diseases, 7 months old.

  • Cirneco dell’Etna – from Sicily to Russia

    Ekaterina 1 250Whilst I do not support breeding podencos, here is a lovely story about the small Cirneco Dell’Etna podencos from Sicily, which are now making a name for themselves in Russia. Unlike the Andaluz, Ibicenco and Canario especially – of which there is massive over-breeding, abandonment and killing, the Cirneco dell’Etna is not well known. So Ekaterina Klimova tells her story.

    I Ekaterina Klimova, have been studying and breeding Cirneco Dell’Etna for more than five years. The first woman introduced one to the city of St. Petersburg, imported from Sicily. Now in my kennel Mia Santo’s three bitches Cirneco. Two females are involved in the breeding program, I want to receive and recover the ancient, beautiful unique type Cirneco Dell’Etna.
