I will never forget the day we collected her she was so thin and so scared her fragility and vulnerability was palpable. A moment where you wish you could tell her its all going to be ok and she would understand your words. More shocking once examined by our vets and after taking xrays. She had a badly dislocated hip and a fracture to her ankle but they were old injuries. I cannot imagine the level of pain she suffered and she was surviving on the side of a busy road. Further complications she tested positive for leishmania if left there her chances of survival were not good. In time Penelope became part of the family and her cheeky character began to shine through. Like so many Podencos their ability to over come such adversity always amazes me and she was no different.

Jaen, Spain – abandoned under a road bridge
The abandoned dog problem is Spain is horrendous. Here’s the story of two in Jaen, luckily rescued; a podenco and a mastin, the latter which had a chain embedded in its neck. They are both traumatized and the rescue group are looking for foster homes for them.

They need a foster home which has a lot of experience with dogs traumatized and will receive all the attention they deserve.I don’t want medals or much less, there are many other cases too but I just want people to know the reality that we live day to day here in jaén. They have been taken to the vet, sadly the podenco will probably have a leg amputated, the mastin has a chain buried in the skin. They will need a long recovery and specialist care.

Protectora La Bienvenida, Ciudad Real – Podenco Campaneros in rescue
I first visited La Bienvenida refuge, Cuidad Real (200km south of Madrid) in July 2007 with the French association L’Europe des Levriers. We collected 4 galgos from there to bring back to France and forever homes. One of them was Karmel who I adopted and shortly after I created my blog Galgo News to publicise the plight of the galgos and podencos.
