Letter to the Spanish Hunters – they have changed nothing…
It is now 10 years since members of some prominent galgo/podenco rescue associations – Galgos sin Fronteras, Amigos de los Galgos, Greyhounds in Need and others with the then- met Spanish Minister of the Environment Cristina Narbona and representatives of the Spanish hunting federations to discuss tackling the problem of over-breeding and mass killing/abandonment of their hunting dogs. Sadly the hunters were not prepared to meet any of the reasonable demands of the associations, too arrogant to even acknowledge the problems they caused. Sadly also since then there has not been another Spanish Minister prepared to consider the problem.
Often I, like the amazing volunteers working on the ground in Spain, woke up angry against the hunters and the long-reaching problems they cause, and so in March 2013 I put fingers to computer and wrote this letter to them! I am reposting here because the contents STILL apply, over 3 years on.

Cordoba, abandoned podenca producing too many puppies!
This poor podenca finds herself in a situation of so many thousands of abandoned hunting dogs in Spain. She is in Cordoba, abandoned long ago. Someone left a wooden box for her for shelter…this is her second litter of puppies! Already the hunters are in the vicinity, 2 puppies are already gone, too young to leave their mom. When will the bloody hunters take responsibility for the problem of their abandoned/lost hunting dogs producing litter after litter….
Shelters are full to overflowing, foster homes are full….still there is an urgent appeal for an association to take on this little bitch and her puppies. Contact Spain (0034)661237095

TheKennelKlub and Podenco Friends – saving the Lanzarote podencos
Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends is now helping Laura Johnson of TheKennelKlub with the Lanzarote podencos. Here’s what Bev writes.
‘A picture that says a thousand words……. So many podencos are subjected to such a harsh life they are never loved or treated with kindness like we do with out own dogs. They don’t get to sleep on a sofa o,r a comfy bed, if they are lucky they are are held in cages where they can sleep on the ground. Many don’t even get this, they are restrained on chains 24 hours 7 days a week only released when taken out on a hunt. Then they are abandoned if sick or old, for its much cheaper to get a pup or younger one, than pay for veterinary treatment.
The Podenco face two battles, a life of subjugation and then a lack of adoptions for they are not viewed suitable as a family pet, the odds are really stacked against them. On the Island of Lanzarote Podencos have been discovered in the most deplorable conditions held in holes in the ground with no natural light, left there for days with stale water and no food. This is 2016 and why this is allowed to continue is beyond me, and with the power of social media today, few people know about the breed outside Spain.
I can not imagine what goes through their minds when they are handed into a perrera, thrown into cages or corrals with other dogs they have never encountered before. Exposed to other dogs that may carry sickness or disease, fights break out over food for they are fed in hoppers, the strongest survive so many others never eat. It is without doubt a very stressful situation for them. These could be their final days on this earth, for once the perreras are full they have no choice but to euthanise and Podencos are at high risk due to the lack of potential adoptions.

Day of the Dog – Malaga style! And they call this ‘cultural promotion’!
I’ve reported on ‘shows’ like this before. This one was at the end of September. The town/village/what ever FRIGILIANA EAST OF MALAGA has posted this on their town hall’s page where they also post things for tourists
The post says DIA DEL PERRO = THE DAY OF THE DOG. This is an example of a ‘cultural promotion’. Rather it is barbarity! The dogs spend a baking hot day like this, no water, hundreds more in cages outside. At least they are not chained.All other coastal cities in Malaga have a totally different approach to DIA DEL PERRO. Maybe Frigiliana is doing a favor to these poor dogs by exposing how they are maltreated dogs!

Letter from Protectora Arca de Noe to the Hunter that abandoned to this podenco (and to all other hunters)
26/9/2016 – Today is one of those days that I prefer not to write about but I am crying in rage at the cruelty of others, on behalf of the volunteers of the Association the Ark of Noah of Córdoba.
Last night we went to sleep with a broken heart. We received notice of the existence of a dying dog at Los Villares peri-urban park, a hound from one of the rehaleros” (dogs for hire for hunting). Within our huge limitations we got to work and within a couple of hours we went to help him. But upon arrival, we found his lifeless body, invaded already by flies.
A while before we had seen his photo, the image of a dying hound nailing its eyes to the camera, screaming a silent plea for help. And we all wept to know of his agonizing death which filled us with anger and rage against the abandonment and abuse of these animals by the hunters.

Podenco Polo – in the pound for over 4 years! Have you room in your heart and home for him?
WE BEG OF YOU PLEASE SHARE POLO AND CHANGE HIS LIFE THIS WEEK…
After 4 ½ years Polo has not had one offer of a home. He has never known love or affection, comfort or freedom. Surely it is his turn. Look at his photos, he is so sweet. One of the volunteer’s children gave him a bath recently and he loved it, he was so cuddly and Joshy got big kisses to say ‘Thank you for giving me a bit of attention’.
That he is still a loving, affectionate boy after all this time in a concrete cage is a testament to his strength of character and his nice nature.
SURELY SOMEONE OUT THERE COULD LOVE HIM!
Polo is only as small dog at about 45 cm high and weighing about 15 kg. He is now about 7 or 8 years old and really deserves better for the rest of his life.

Helping the hounds of the Seville – Malaga olive groves
Pepis Refuge is halfway between Malaga and Seville. It’s in the midst of podenco hunting land in the olive groves, and galgo racing. Since starting the refuge in 2005 Jane and Alan Brian have saved hundreds of these dogs who would otherwise have suffered a sad ending. Here is a beautiful tribute to some of those hounds.
