  • Help the repair process for this little podenca

    Manuela podenca in vet 400 17 12 2016Update on the little Podenquita picked up on the road with a broken hip and unable to stand. The Recal shelter has taken care of her and, already, she is in the veterinary clinic to be examined. Recal needs your help to cover expenses because she is not the only dog needing help.     Manuela Cornejo is a councillor in Feria and, as an animal lover, she is contacted regarding any needing help! Her work is voluntary, so please help towards the vet fees to get this young little podenca back on her feet and ready for adoption. There will be regular updates on her diagnosis, progress and vet bill amount.

    ‘Everyone has always answered our call to help sharing our podencos for adoption and we have had great success. But again we ask for you help. To find homes in Spain for Podencos is limited so we look to other countries and we ask for your help to share their details as much as possible. This is the lifeblood of any rescue unless people are aware we have so many waiting for their forever sofa they will remain here.

    These are some of our ours for adoption, we have more that are not ready for their next stage in their lives. We have a number reserved for the new year but have come to a position where we can not accept anymore until some are re-homed. We don’t have space to take any more in. Unless stated all of them have been tested negative for Leishmania, Filaria, Ehlrichia, Lymes and anaplasma all are sterilised unless they are puppies. Thank you for your support

  • Axarquia Animal Rescue, Malaga province – podencos waiting in hope

An important notice for anyone supporting them is that they have a new website – just one letter different from the previous one but very important that the new one is used!

  • Feria (Badajoz) – podenca puppy injured – urgently needs treatment

    Feria (Badajoz) podenca puppy injured 400 12 2016It’s nearly 10 years since I became heavily involved with the plight of the podenco and galgo and it doesn’t get any easier; I find it hard not to respond to so many of the urgent appeals which arrive in my Inbox! The following is an appeal not dissimilar to the one I received about 8 years ago of a little podenca badly injured on a Spanish road and needing urgent vet treatment and care. On that occasion it was my little Bebe – still bossing the much bigger galgos around and still very mobile on 4 legs!

    This little podenca puppy has just been rescued badly injured from a Spanish road – barely able to stand. She’s in the Feria area of Badajoz, not a good area for hunting hounds at the best of times. I’ve appealed widely on facebook (that’s the only contact I have for the lady who took her in) for an association to take her in and get her into a vet clinic. The refuges are full to bursting, fingers crossed one can help asap.

    One tends to think of Spain always basking in sunshine. Not at the moment – Andalucia is being battered by torrential rain and storms. The refuges are struggling – please contact any you support to see what help they need.

  • Podenco Pablo – from Torrox to Northumberland

    Jane Colton Pablo 400 11 2016Jane Colton tells the story of how she came to adopt her Podenco Pablo.

    ‘I worked for the rescue dogs and cats here in Torrox Costa. It is not a registered charity, just a kind German lady who started a long time ago by taking in stray dogs. She was reported to the council and was told she could not keep the animals in her penthouse apartment. She moved to the campo and lived in a large shed for a few years. Now she has a larger building with land and has built concrete kennels for the larger dogs, the smaller dogs and cats live in a gated area adjoining her home, she has 60 dogs now.

    My dog and I live in Spain only in the winter now, he does miss the sunshine, so I work in the Spanish market every Monday selling 2nd hand goods. We also have extremely kind people who donate and help in different ways. My rescue Great Dane had recently died of old age and I decided no more dogs, as I was so devastated to lose her.

    Then after a couple of months an Ibizan Hound was taken in and I knew I couldn’t resist him, he took two hours to catch, his name is Pablo and I have had him for nearly nine years. I live in the country in Northumberland so in his younger days he caught many rabbits. He carried them home. He enjoyed every last morsel…there have been times when I have waited for him whilst he is hunting and thought I had lost him but as every Podenco owner knows too well, they always return but when?

    I would just love another one, but not just yet.’

    So live the hounds… in very poor conditions, locked in oppressing filth 24 hours a day, tied up, malnourished, and surrounded by faeces… enduring the heat of summer and the winter rains… their looks of terror say it all….

    When they don’t want to hunt or at the end of the period of hunting the cazadores abandon them or kill them, because they no longer “serve”

    Not hunting with hounds and other races!!!!!

  • Podenco Spirit – shot in the mouth by a galguero – update

    Refugio Candela Spirit 400 1 12 2016Update on podenco Spirit with Refugio la Candela – the podenco who was shot in the mouth and lost the whole of his lower jaw. Eventually when Spirit is strong enough, the Spanish vets hope to build a lower jaw for him.

  • Podenco Friends – Lua’s story

    Bev Lua 400 2016A happy ending story from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

    Lua…. her story began back in 2013, a feral podenca and her family surviving on the streets in Seville. She had already had 2 litters of pups. When she first arrived with us she was a very angry dog, ‘don’t invade my personal space, people are the enemy’. It’s taken a long time but today she is very much part of the family living in the house. Jasira helped so much with this change of attitude a very special friendship and Lua felt the loss just as much as us. This year Lua had surgery on her hip, she is no longer in pain, meds were helping and she has made a good recovery.
