When I published my definitive guide to the plight of the galgo – From Heaven to Hell – in 2010 it contained a report from a volunteer named Rosa on the problems with one of the reputedly worst privately owner perreras in Spain, Olivenza. For years animal activists/association have been fighting to get it closed down permanently. I have now received this appeal from Mo Swatek of Pro-galgo International, please sign and share the petition.

Please sign this petition and circulate widely. Below the reasons why we need to close this hellhole for ever.

Since 2009 many Spanish as well as International associations reported the terrible state of the dogs taken out of this pound, surprisingly run by two women. Thousands of dogs have died there, not only from deadly injections but from hunger, diseases and severe neglect. The owner was not even able to show bills for kibble, she fed the dogs stale bread, leftovers from restaurants and if possible, she did not feed them at all. This way, the dogs where dying slowly, she did not have to spend any money on euthanasia and as the dogs had no food, they also did not poop into the kennels, so less work for cleaning.

The perrera of Olivenza receives money from the Diputacion to collect abandoned dogs of the villages nearby. due to good connections to prominent and high ranking politician. Until now it was nearly impossible to go after them. when ever someone reported the atrocities committed in this Auschwitz-like pound, all reports where either dismissed or archived.

But then, the end of February 2017 SEPRONA (the national police, environmental department) managed to stop an illegal transport from Olivenza pound with dogs meant to go to France and Hungary. These animals were confiscated as their health state was so bad, they probably would not have made it for a trip further than to the next veterinary. Some galgos had their microchip cut out and the perrera owner did not report it to the authorities, the puppies had not been microchipped, the documents of the dogs where not ok nor was the transport vehicle etc.

The 21 dogs, several galgos and other breeds including some very very small puppies have been taken first to another pound and then into the care of a qualified person where they are treated for all the health problems including corona virus. Some of the puppies and and adult dog did not make it, they died due to the severe malnutrition combined with corona virus and other health problems.

We hope the survivors soon can be given in foster care once they have passed the quarantine. They will stay in foster care until the Judge gives out a permit to rehome them, so we will do everything to avoid them to be sent to Hungary or somewhere else.
