For Jarisa. Three years ago you came into our care, you suffered so much yet had the most forgiving of hearts. We lost a beautiful angel who represented the true spirit of the podencos …. never to be forgotten. Podenco Friends.

Saving the Lanzarote Podencos – TheKennelKlub and Podenco Friends
Ever since I became involved in the plight of the podencos and galgos back in 2007, as a member of a French rescue association fostering many we brought out of Spain, I have been publicising the terrible suffering of the Podencos in the Canary Islands. Their only hope of a forever life other than across the Rainbow Bridge is to be adopted on mainland Europe. In recent years new associations have formed in the USA and Canada and now many of these deserving and loving dogs are finding their forever sofas there. Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends is helping Laura Johnson of TheKennelKlub and the Lanzarote Podencos.

Update on Reina – the future looks good!
Update from Manuela Cornejo on Reina, the little podenca badly injured on a road in Feria, Badajoz.
16/1/2017 – The latest news I have of Reina is that perhaps with the splint she has on her right leg, it has corrected the dislocation and the vet will not need to re-operate surgically.
The following is the Thank You from Manuela for everyone’s help in this case. If you donated to the vet fees, the thanks are to you too.
‘I can not be happier and grateful. Our Reina already, runs and besides a sponsor that will cover all the expenses of the total medical recovery, has found a human mother (Astrid Mulder) in Holland.
Yes, I’m excited and write this with a lump in my throat and with tears in my eyes. I do not know how to thank you, how to give back to everyone who, without knowing me personally, you have trusted me and with this appeal, you have saved the life of a wonderful being, our Reina.

2nd PAES Conference – Challenging the Iceberg – 25 & 26 February 2017
The task facing Rescue and Animal Welfare Organisations in Spain is huge and relentless.
The constant flow of Animals needing rescue, care and re-homing is similar to seeing the tip of an Iceberg. As with an Iceberg we are seeing the impact of only a small proportion of the problem, the vast majority lies below the surface.
The unseen mass, is, among others, a compound failure of a clear understanding of the Law affecting Animal Welfare.
What are the responsibilities and accountabilities of the various agencies ,Municipal, Law Enforcement,
Veterinary and Legal in applying and reinforcing the Law? -

Update on Spirit with Refugio La Candela
Good news again.
‘we started the day couldn’t be better? ♡
Spirit improvement and his liver too!!! 😉
Many of us wondering each day and is that the clinical situation of spirit has been extremely sensitive since we picked him up with a serious injury in the jaw caused by a shot.
It takes a long time entered the veterinary hospital Valencia south where we have already done a lot of tests and one of the two operations that he needs to recover the quality of life that was taken from her in a second.
In one of the counts of control we have noted that his liver was disturbed and he was quickly put on treatment.
Has been improving every day, even though it’s still under weight is a trend of improvement always…. and that is due to his strength and his will to live.

Podenco Ibicenco and Podenco Canario – 2 separate types – sign the petition
Why should I sign this petition? For over 25 years, podencos have not been considered as sighthounds. The reason behind this was that the SCI (World Dog Organisation based in Switzerland) wanted to put the Canario Podenco and the Ibicenco Podenco, which at the time belonged to two different breed groups, back into one group. The hunting lobbies got involved (especially the Spanish hunting lobby, operating through the Spanish association of dog breeders) and because they feared that hunting with sighthounds might be banned at some point, they asked for those two breeds to be classified as “primitive dogs” and not “sighthounds.” And they won!
Unfortunately, only Ibicenco, Canario, and Portugese Podencos could be returned to the sighthound group as these are the only officially recognised breeds. Still, that means thousands of dogs! And the Canario Podencos represent the vast majority of dogs found on Spanish islands -and they are the ones who most need our help because they are so hard to reach. Many breeders within the SCI are also trying to push for this breed group change.

To the Mayor of Cordoba – sign the petition
A petition with a difference. This one will be sent to the Mayor of Cordoba, Spain. Here is a translation.
‘An institution dedicated exclusively to the protection of animals and the respect of animal protection laws is necessary in every city where there are protectionist groups. The animal police must be equipped with veterinary medicine vehicles, a place to recover animals in situations of neglect and abuse, where they have the power to fine and punish the aggressors anywhere.
We must control cases of abuse and abandonment of animals, and appropriate people who love animals and know all the legislation that exists on the subject. These people should be prepared to deal with animal emergencies, shelter transfers and police power to arrest people accused of ill-treatment and murder of animals.
Mr. Governor of the province of Cordoba, please do something to stop such abuses, murder and abandonment of animals.
Please sign and share this petition widely.
