  • Animales Rioja refuge flooded out, please donate to pay for dogs to go in kennels

Animales Rioja land is now full of water because of the non stop raining. Bea and the rest of the volunteers are taking the dogs to put safe, but they need donations to place them in residences. They have over 70 dogs – kennels are about 3 euros/night/dog – please help. To find out more, Pilar speaks English internationalanimalesrioja@gmail.com

  • SARA Protectora, Lanzarote, Canary Islands – please adopt an Island podenco – give them a chance

SARA_Cafeina_190I have highlighted often the problem for podencos on the Spanish Islands…Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Ibiza, Mallorca. People go on holiday to these places and don’t see the hell of life for the dogs and cats (mainly) on the islands, where the only hope of a forever life is to be adopted abroad – Europe, Scandinavia, UK.

SARA Protectora on Lanzarote have dozens of deserving podencos… Rick and Lesley Beauchamp take a few to the UK for rehoming, a few go to Germany and the Czech Republic. BUT the cost of flights can be prohibitive and also it needs one person for every 2 dogs on a flight.

Here are a few of the dozens in the refuge on Lanzarote…over 60 Podenco Caqnario, different from the Podenco Ibicenco in appearance but not in character – if you can’t adopt one, please go along to the shelter and walk a dog, support the volunteers, anything to help them keep going.

  • OUTRAGEOUS! – Andalucia Junta authorises hunters to beat dogs to death – Protest!

  • Finland – sending a rescue dog for rehoming – consider very seriously before sending it

Many podencos, galgos and greyhounds (from Ireland) are adopted in Norway and Sweden without a problem. However Finland is further north. I am disturbed by the news that a podenco from Galgos del Sur went to Finland for adoption believing there was no problem for the podenco – the Finnish authorities are being very difficult about it, and the podenco is not allowed to be rehomed. The podenco is still in Finland whilst an association tries to rehome him. (Bloody bureacrats!) So, anyone wanting to know more about the problems for importing a rescued dog to Finland for adoption, here are some links.

  • Seville – podencos for hire for hunting!

I’m still stuck in the UK because of snow, and struggling to post. Here’s a story I received earlier this week, emailed on to associations I hope can help, and now post you the story. Apologies though, as I’m using a computer which won’t allow me to post pix.

‘On January 6, 2013 I drove with my husband and adopted dog (from a perrera near Malaga, ‘El Paraiso’) from Tarifa to Seville, and on to Cordoba.

We stopped at a rural restaurant for coffee where I became aware of a whole lot of dogs crying somewhere in the vicinity.
