  • Podenco Pepe – from streets of Valencia to the UK – appealing for a home

    Ciara Pepe sleeping 250This is the heart-wrenching appeal I received this morning.

    My name is Ciara. I am writing to enquire about the possibility of rehoming my Podenco, Pepe, through your website.

    I carried out an internship in Valencia last year, and, long story short, returned to Scotland six months later having rescued a Podenco puppy from the streets, nursed him back to health and brought him home with me. Since then, we have been blissfully happy together, and he’s like my baby. But the bad news is that my circumstances have recently changed. I’m about to graduate from university and have been offered a job in Belfast, which is full-time, and in that instance I will be unable to continue looking after him. It’s not a situation in which to keep a young podenco.

    Our Podenco Story

    We have had dogs over many years and mostly 2 at any time. In January 2013we had 1 mixed breed dog called Honey,and we were considering a second dog. At that point we had never even heard of a Podenco. We started casually searching dog rescues on the internet, and amongst that found some of the Podenco related rescue organisations. We had never imagined that you could have a rescue dog brought over from Spain and weren’t aware of the quarantine laws being changed. We could see the difference between the rescue dog situation in this country and the awful conditions in the Perreras and the terrible short life expectancies in those. We were horrified by the attitudes of the galgueros, and the medieval views on animal rights held by many in Spain. We knew we had to have a Poddy.

  • Podencos in Spain – a hard life on the streets

    Elena Madrid pods 250 3Two heart -wrenching stories from Spain – starving podencos needing help.

    We have called them Alba and Maya – two podencas have appeared in a very bad situation on the streets of a small village in Madrid, Fuentidueña de Tajo. Skinny and dying, hardly able to stand up.

    A very good friend of Elena Alonso, who gives her whole life to animals,found them and took them into the car, People were just walking by ignoring them.

    They are two young female pods, full of tiks and stunned by fear. Nevertheless, they aren’t able even to eat anything. They can barely stand up!

  • Podenco Canario Marlin – from Lanzarote to the UK

    SARA Marlin 4 Rescued as a puppy by SARA Protectora in Lanzarote, Marlin is now in foster in the UK and awaiting his forever home. Foster dad Rick describes this beautiful boy.

    ‘MARLIN 4 yr old Podenco Canario dog. Medium sized light tan coloured dog found wandering the streets as a puppy , having been in SARA shelter on Lanzarote since. Now in the UK and looking for a forever home!

    He is neutered, microchipped, inoculated and passported. He is housetrained, people friendly, children friendly and dog friendly. Unlike many of his brred he has not shown any signs of being an escape artist in the garden or indeed interest in running off when on his walks. He much prefers to stay close to his friends where he can play chase the ball and chase each other!

  • Introducing Romy, Podenco Ibicenco with Galgos del Norte

    Romy 1 5 2014 250Meet Romy, a Podenco Ibicenco with Galgos del Norte. He’s nearly 2 years old and turned up near the home of his rescuer terrified, very thin and with clear signs of having been abused. She fed him and gradually little by little he allowed her to catch him and take him home.

    He’s learnt there is another way of living where the humans give affection and warmth.

    He is now a sociable dog, very affectionate, very good but rather mistrustful with strangers. He has learned to play with other dogs, loves to play with the ball, run and enjoys lying in the sun. He can live alone or with other dogs, but not cats. He seems to be enjoying his stolen childhood.

    This is from Addy, ‘What happened with this boy goodness knows. He has gunshot wounds, a broken leg, a broken hip and is so dumped in Hellin perrera, Albacete (one of the worst). Of course we can not leave this boy and there is an urgent and fast assistance. I start to apply a great action to recruit for all of his medical expenses.
