Great read about volunteers at Scooby in March, especially to learn that all the podencos they rescued recently are either in foster or adoptant homes. Do think about taking a ‘holiday’ and volunteering at Scooby. Besides the hotel mentioned in the report, Scooby also offer caravan accommodation. And don’t forget, Scooby have hundreds of animals for adoption – dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, donkeys, poultry…

Podenco Moreno – a hard life at the hands of a galguero
The story of Moreno, from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.
For many months we have been talking with the local hunters to show them there is an alternative for the Podencos they no longer want or need. Last week they handed Moreno into our care. He needs a complicated surgery to try and save his front leg. This is from a fracture that happened over a year ago and was left to heal with no treatment. If gives him a lot of pain at the moment, he is just about terrified of everything. We are working with him to try and build a level of trust in us.

The Motril Posse in Murcia – Last Hope Dog Rescue in action
Last Hope Dog Rescue, Murcia, now has some beautiful podencos needing forever homes. Irene Allan tells the story.
‘Last year we rescued four puppies from Motril that were feral in the campo. The mother of these puppies has been difficult to catch and has been running with another podenco resulting in more puppies unfortunately. We have now collected the puppies as they were in danger and have delivered a dog trap to catch the mum. If we are successful, we will bring her to the finca to sterilise her and provide a sanctuary, so she may gain trust with us and eventually get Bonita her forever home. Animal Aid Foundation shelter, Valencia – help desperately needed
A desperately tragic situation – if you can help Femke in anyway, please do. She writes –
‘You have probably heard about the Animal Aid Foundation (AAF) in Valencia, which for personal circumstances has to close its doors after rescuing animals from all over Spain for 20 years. I am one of the volunteers helping to rehome the dogs. There are some Podencos left, would you be able to help with finding homes for them? Thanking in advance.
We are also looking for people who are driving back to the UK happy to take a dog or two, for adoption families we find in the UK, so if you hear of anyone…

The plight of the podencos
So far this month, 25 podencos in perreras have been posted on my ‘Podencos in Perreras’ facebook page. That is just the tip of the iceberg. Many are starving, some are old, some of them are on CESE which means the hunter has handed them in and said ‘kill as soon as possible’. One poor soul has had his ears and tail cut – they usually do this to dogs who hunt boars. shorter tails and ears usually means less hunting accidents with branches and even with the wild boars. They can even cut them legally in the region where it’s not allowed, because according to the law, cutting the ears and tail off is better for the this kind of dog! He is still in the perrera.
Another sad story is of two podenco puppies – about 6 months old – rescued from a river. They had ropes found their necks attached to rocks. Sadly the little boy was already dead but the little bitch was still alive. She is now in the care of an association. (see photo below)

‘Our story
In the year 2005 my dear rescue dog, that I had adopted in 1990 from the shelter in Tenerife, died at the age of 15. I was heart broken and swore that I would never ever have another dog. However on the Internet I came across a rescue organization that had been rescuing dogs from Estonia since 2001. I was surprised that they had also few pictures of the Spanish dogs on their page. That of course got my attention as my deceased dog had been from Spain.
