Protectora La Bienvenida, Ciudad Real – Podenco Campaneros in rescue
I first visited La Bienvenida refuge, Cuidad Real (200km south of Madrid) in July 2007 with the French association L’Europe des Levriers. We collected 4 galgos from there to bring back to France and forever homes. One of them was Karmel who I adopted and shortly after I created my blog Galgo News to publicise the plight of the galgos and podencos.
This is the story of 2 Podenco Campaneros (the large white woolly podencos used to hunt boar and deer) which La Bienvenida have rescued.

Podencos Tigra and Lola – packing their bags for the UK
(Lola) In just two short weeks Tigra and Lola will be packing their bags for the Uk!

With so many dogs at the finca our funds have taken quite the beating 🙁 we care for 10 dogs just at the finca costing us €2.50/day/dog! It’s a great price, but it really adds up! And on top are bills, flea and worming!

Saving the Gran Canaria podencos – how you can help
Fore many years now I have been publicising the plight of the podencos in the Canary Islands – Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, El Hierro – their main hope of life forever is on mainland Europe and across the Atlantic. The new group Saving the Gran Canaria podencos is doing sterling work, Suzanne Stacey is a vet in the UK who has taken this problem to heart and is already doing sterling work.
Here are some of the stunning podencos in the perrera, most of them will be killed – such an unnecessary waste of life, of beautiful dogs which will make wonderful companion hounds.

A blind podenco hoping for that special forever home
I met some of the lovely Axarquia volunteers at the PAES conference last October. Here is an appeal for a special podenco in their care. Dawn McClelland writes.
Is there anyone out there that can help us to find some contacts to rehome an adorable blind Podenco called Pancho – this lad is blind from birth, managed on the streets for a while and then came into our care. Pancho does not let his disability limit him at all – after 10 minutes he can navigate a new place perfectly. He is utterly gorgeous, loving and a credit to his breed – can anyone help please? Podenco Canarios Romeo and Valentino – from perrera to forever homes
I’ve always advertised the Canary Islands podenco rescue associations as they desperately need help to rehome these fabulous hounds. Here’s a lovely story about two of them rehomed with Patricia Herrera and her husband.
‘After finding out just how easy it was to adopt a podenco from Gran Canaria through the Saving the Gran Canaria Podencos page, thanks to the amazing help of a certain wonderful someone … I decided that one podenco is never enough and decided to get a pod pal for Valentino, who at 1 needed a playmate as my other dogs are 11, 12 and maybe 16 years old!
As you can see it was a rip roaring success and Romeo and Valentino adore each other and coming from the perrera were both very well socialised and surprisingly also house trained despite their harsh upbringing.
Podencos are such beautiful, gentle and sensitive dogs they can find pound life unbearably stressful and often give up eating and lose the will to live and are so terribly grateful for being saved and shown the love they have longed for all their lives so adopting or fostering is incredibly rewarding. -
Podenco Canario Porron from Lanzarote, hoping for a forever home

‘PORRON IS SETTLING IN THE HOUSE’ One week after Porrons girlfriend left to go to her new home Porron, who initially missed her so badly,is settling into the house very nicely! He loves all our dogs who have accepted him very well and he particularly likes the soft dog sofas, especially if he can find a cuddly toy to chew! He is a lovely boy, 18 months old, house trained, neutered, innoculated and of course microchipped! He loves the car, he even spent a day in the office with me this week where he charmed all the staff and visitors. He really needs his new home to come along quickly . Lanzarote, Canary Islands – Podenco Canarios hoping for forever homes
Two lovely Podenco Canarios needing their forever homes. Rescued by The Kennel Klub and now in foster homes. Their best hope for a comfy sofa for life is on mainland Europe or the US. Please contact Laura at The Kennel Klub if you would like to be considered for one of these lovelies.
GOLDIE has blossomed in to an extremely handsome young man – he looks like he spends hours every day applying eyeliner jejeje! He is one year old and has been living in a kennel since he was just 3 months old, firstly in the pound and since we rescued him with us. He is extremely affectionate, good with other dogs and a lively, active, fun dog. He knows how to sit but he does need training as he has missed out on his puppy lessons! He will make a great, faithful friend for the right family. He is in Lanzarote but transport could be arranged for the right home.
