  • Podenco Pablo – from Torrox to Northumberland

    Jane Colton Pablo 400 11 2016Jane Colton tells the story of how she came to adopt her Podenco Pablo.

    ‘I worked for the rescue dogs and cats here in Torrox Costa. It is not a registered charity, just a kind German lady who started a long time ago by taking in stray dogs. She was reported to the council and was told she could not keep the animals in her penthouse apartment. She moved to the campo and lived in a large shed for a few years. Now she has a larger building with land and has built concrete kennels for the larger dogs, the smaller dogs and cats live in a gated area adjoining her home, she has 60 dogs now.

    My dog and I live in Spain only in the winter now, he does miss the sunshine, so I work in the Spanish market every Monday selling 2nd hand goods. We also have extremely kind people who donate and help in different ways. My rescue Great Dane had recently died of old age and I decided no more dogs, as I was so devastated to lose her.

    Then after a couple of months an Ibizan Hound was taken in and I knew I couldn’t resist him, he took two hours to catch, his name is Pablo and I have had him for nearly nine years. I live in the country in Northumberland so in his younger days he caught many rabbits. He carried them home. He enjoyed every last morsel…there have been times when I have waited for him whilst he is hunting and thought I had lost him but as every Podenco owner knows too well, they always return but when?

    I would just love another one, but not just yet.’

  • Podenco Friends – Lua’s story

    Bev Lua 400 2016A happy ending story from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

    Lua…. her story began back in 2013, a feral podenca and her family surviving on the streets in Seville. She had already had 2 litters of pups. When she first arrived with us she was a very angry dog, ‘don’t invade my personal space, people are the enemy’. It’s taken a long time but today she is very much part of the family living in the house. Jasira helped so much with this change of attitude a very special friendship and Lua felt the loss just as much as us. This year Lua had surgery on her hip, she is no longer in pain, meds were helping and she has made a good recovery.

  • Portuguese Podengo Florence – waiting for her forever home

    Dogs of Portugal have this absolutely gorgeous young Portuguese Podengo waiting for her forever home. You can see photos and videos of her on this weblink. Please someone, give her a chance.

    If you are thinking of adopting a podenco, please adopt from a shelter. There is a list of rehoming associations here. Don’t adopt from a perrera. Ignore the cries of ‘these dogs will be killed’ because what happens if they are saved – they end up in a shelter, if there is room for them, and then could wait years before getting a home.

    Remember, if you adopt a dog from a shelter, then that leaves space for another podenco – maybe abandoned in the campo, starving and injured on a roadside.

    Adopt from an association, not a perrera.

  • Podenco Friends and TheKennelKlub – saving the Lanzarote podencos

    Lanzarote new one 400 5 11 2016Lanzarote an Island located 125km of the coast of Africa part of the Canary Islands and one of 17 autonomous communities administered by Spain. A popular tourist destination year round due to its climate yet a few kms inland there is a very different story. Podencos are the primary dog chosen for hunting hidden away from view the situation for them is dire, held in underground caves and just like Mainland Spain high numbers are abandoned or handed into perreras every year. To re-home the podencos from Lanzarote is difficult due to lack of options for flights over seas, very few are re-homed to local people on the island.

    It’s a small island with limited facilities and the perreras are unable to keep them due to lack of space so many podencos are euthanised or living in extremely cramped conditions. Saving the Lanzarote Podencos has been created to help and hopefully find more homes for them overseas with the collaboration of the Kennel Klub on Lanzarote and Podenco Friends on mainland Spain.

    Our first rescue is of 6 Podencos just recently handed into a Perrera on the Island. All the Podencos will be attended by the Veterinary Clinic that works with Kennel Klub. Each will be fully vaccinated, health checked, blood tested and sent to the laboratories for Leishmania, Filaria, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma and will be issued with the original reports from the lab. They will be issued passports, microchipped, sterilized and accompanied with a letter of authority to change the microchip into the new owners name.

  • Podencos galgore at Pepis Dog Refuge – please help feed them

    Pepis podenca 400 2 25 10 2016Hunting hounds galore being abandoned or handed in to Pepis Dog Refuge! Galgos by their hunters, podencos thrown over the fence or abandoned at the gates! These two little beauties arrived earlier in the year, Lulu was thrown over the fence in March and badly injured her leg but when I visited the refuge in September she had made a wonderful recovery. Whilst I was at the refuge we collected 4-month old Vero, lost and injured in the village. Then another little pup abandoned at the gate, another podenco sitting waiting at the gates, and another young one badly in need of feeding! Sadly there isn’t room for him so Jane is leaving food out in the hope that he will hang around until they can squeeze him in. It’s heartbreaking for them.

    Now we are in the countdown to Christmas, please consider ways you can help Pepis and feed the dozens of hounds there. Buy your gifts from the many high street stores through Easyfundraising, buy some Christmas cards, join the teaming group. Or simply send them a donation. Every little helps, especially in this time when the exchange rate to euros has dropped! That means Pepis income has dropped, through no fault of their own.
