  • Spanish Stray Dogs – Dog Breeds in Spanish pounds: Podenco

    Spanish Stray Dogs 400 2 2019
Pounds all over Spain are full of dogs of many colours, sizes and breeds. Podencos, bodegueros, mastins, Spanish water dog and many more, all can be found looking for a home. Each with their distinctive traits and temperaments. On this article we want to introduce you to one of the most common breeds found all over Spain, and in particular the south, the podenco.

Podencos are a sighthound bred to hunt. They change in size and colours but they all are very clever and intelligent, always very aware of its surroundings and sensitive to their human’s reactions. They are very curious and although they can be shy, they cannot help wanting to explore new things and places.

They are a strong breed highly resistant to illness. These dogs are used to hunt under a punishing sun for many hours and in spite of their fragile looking bodies they are very tough and resilient with a high pain threshold.

  • A Poem for Podenco Balu – an invisible waiting for his forever home

    Balu 1 400 2 2019
It is so sad that even after posting about Balu last year, he is STILL waiting for his forever home.

Ann Marie Payne of Ann’s Canine Care says, ‘Balu was brought to me by Mª Jose Guerrero Herrera who found him on the streets of Campillos where I live in Southern Spain. He has been with me now for over a year, and not one person has expressed any interest in him. It’s such a shame because he’s so loving, and with a great personality. Good on the lead and, enjoys the company of other dogs, both male and female. Not sure about cats though.

So far Balu has had over 600 shares on facebook and I thank you for every one of them, but now with a new album I’m asking, please share him again. Maybe somebody may see him this time and fall in love with him.
Please like the page https://www.facebook.com/annscaninecare/ (if you are on facebook) because we really do need to reach more people, and a share makes all the difference.

If you can spare a little to help me with his keep, this is the PayPal address ann.spain@gmail.com.

Let’s together find Balu his own home and family. Luv Ann and Balu

    This is Balu’s story

From Fermin at Protectora at Scooby

This podenquita, about four months old, is blind. So most likely its owner has abandoned her for that reason.
As you can see in the video she is a very brave little girl, she guides very well by smell and ear and has no problem to lead a completely normal life.

She is a very cheerful and playful dog and we know she will make very happy the person who decides to share her life with her.

  • Podenco prison visiting on Lanzarote

    KennelKlub India prison 400 26 1 2019
Wonderful news from Laura Johnson of The Kennel Klub on Lanzarote.

26/1/2019 – Today we are privileged to have been able to go in to the penitentiary centre in Tahiche with one of our dogs. This is all thanks to prison officers, especially Urko, who has spent almost a year organising and making it possible. It’s a fantastic opportunity and experience for inmates and dogs alike.

The inmates get some time out of the ordinary prison routine, they get to learn, they are able to interact with dogs who always make things better and it’s a therapeutic group activity.

INDIA, the Podenco who accompanied us today, also got a break from the kennel routine, she got to socialise and she got lots of cuddles and treats!

  • Ibizan Hound Rescue – helping the hounds find homes

    IHR Hazel 1 400
Ibizan Hound Rescue was one of the first rescue and rehoming associations devoted solely to the Podenco, and mainly the Podenco Ibicenco. Valerie Wood was my contact when the association was founded. They have homes hundreds of hounds over the years, and indeed organised the March in Manchester some years ago, which I had the pleasure of attending and some of my lovely blog readers and their hounds!

If you can’t adopt a podenco, then how about sponsoring one…this link introduces you to Hazel (pictured), looking for a sponsor as she needs a special diet. Contact IHR direct to learn more.
