The story so far about Amira, from Sandy Galgoslover
28/07 Last night, at sunset, a remarkable rescue operation took place on a highway heading towards Níjar. A Spanish girl was driving unsuspectingly when she spotted a thin, frail dog staggering along the road. It turned out to be a Podenco girl, dehydrated, confused, and so weak she couldn’t even stand. Her paws were red and painful, burned by the hot asphalt she had walked on in her desperate search for water and a little shade.
It was Sunday, but without hesitation, the girl was taken to the veterinary clinic in Almería. There, she received her first aid: fluids through an IV, painkillers, and rest. She spent the night in the safe hands of the night shift team, far from the heat, fear, and thirst that had surrounded her until then.
1/08 Today, she was allowed to come to GRA. In her eyes, you could read gratitude, fatigue, but also hope. This sweetheart is incredibly lucky that Amira was in the right place at the right time. Thanks to her, this currently frail little dog can start her new life – safe and loved.
We’re mainly giving her some rest and time to catch her breath. In a few days, we’ll take her for a checkup at the vet, and it’s crucial to test her for the most common Mediterranean diseases to ensure we can give her all the care she needs.
Her name? Amira. Named after her guardian angel, who rescued her from a near-hopeless situation. On Amira’s behalf, we’d like to thank Helping Animals Almanzora for supporting this sweetheart. Thanks in part to your help, she’ll have a new chance – one of safety, health, and love.
Welcome, Amira. You’re safe now.

30/07 Yesterday we had an appointment with the vet. She had a thorough checkup and a blood sample was taken to test for any illnesses. Fortunately, all the results were negative, and her blood counts were surprisingly good—especially considering she weighs just 17 kg.
However, we are a little concerned about her coordination. According to the vet, she may have suffered a blow to the head. The next step is to schedule an appointment with a neurologist for further evaluation.
Unfortunately, things are still not going well for our recently arrived Podenco girl, Amira. Although she’s now on her feet, she remains very weak and vulnerable. Yesterday, we noticed strange things in her stool—including a plastic bag. It’s heartbreaking to imagine how hungry she must have been to eat such things.
Today, she suddenly refused to eat. We had to give her a helping hand. A neurologist appointment is already scheduled for next week, but because Amira’s condition has taken a step backwards today, we’re going to the vet tomorrow. There may be something blocked in her intestines that’s making it difficult for her to eat.
She’s currently still on painkillers, but today is the last day of that treatment. We hope with all our heart that we can pull her through.
Thank you for your support and concern. We’ll keep you updated
