You may remember in December 2016 I published the story of Podenca Summer, who arrived in the UK with a bad leg problem. The UK vet wanted to amputate 2 legs (can you imagine the stupidity of such a suggestion?!!) and Bev and Warren of Podenco Friends took her on and have worked with their Spanish vet team to save the legs and give Summer the chance of living out her natural life. Here’a an update from Bev.
‘An update on Summer … we have tapered her pain meds by 50 % and she is coping well and we will continue to reduce. She is able to run around the paddocks but if she does too much then she holds up the leg. This surgery can take a few months to settle and Summer seems much happier in herself, I believe her being in less pain.
We now can start on aqua therapy for her which will be a big help, her gait is still not 100% but better than before and she may always walk a little wonky. As long as she is happy that is all the matters.
It’s been a long haul for Summer and us and I wish we could make her 100% but she came into our care too late to make good the damage. Her adopter in the UK was advised to let her go, the only option was to amputate the front and back legs and of course she could not have just two legs. We were sent her xrays and I discussed with my vets. They said ‘get her back to Spain Bev let’s see if we can help her’. And as always they have been so supportive with Summer.
In time we would love to see Summer on her forever sofa and once we feel we have done everything we can and she is ready then the search for her family will begin. Throughout all of this she has been a superstar; there are times she lashed out but it was always related to the pain in her leg.
Summer has gone through so much and come through the other side, she so deserves a happy ever after.’
This has all been very costly; if you can help Podenco Friends with vet fees, donate paypal podencofriends@hotmail.co.uk.
