I previously reported the story of Podenca Summer in December 2016. Her story continues, now she is with Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends. Please help her, she has suffered so much.

‘Summer was handed into a Perrera ( a municipal pound) in Gran Canaria with a broken front wrist and a number of other medical conditions. She was in danger of being euthanised and was pulled from the pound by another party.

She was taken out of the perrera and re-homed in the UK, flown from GC to Madrid then a road transport to the UK with a broken front wrist! On arrival her adopter was shocked at the poor condition she was in and took her to her vet. Her adopter had not been fully informed of the problems and felt over- whelmed with all the medical issues the veterinary costs were beyond her nor the ability to give her the aftercare needed.

All that came with her was a passport, no written information on her medical history, any treatment or reports despite repeated requests for this information. She came into our care a few months later and she so far has been treated for the following

Scabies, she had multiple skin lesions with open sores and her skin was in terrible condition

Malnutrition, her body condition score was 3/9 her weight was 11.95 kilos – today she is 16.5 kilos

She was diagnosed positive for Dirofilaria (Heartworm,) she now is clear

At some point in the past she had a fracture to the femur which was operated on but badly, it left her with muscle wastage and she was also lame on it. She would bite her hind leg where the plate was and it was pushing on her patella, it appeared to have healed albeit not in an exactly perfect anatomical way. We had the plate removed and physiotherapy to improve the strength in her hind legs.

Her gait is still not correct and she continues to be on pain meds so she had a MRI to establish if it was an issue with her spine. That showed to be clear but she has reaction to pain in the muscles in her back. At the moment her body is out of alignment caused by her compensating her movement due to the problem with her front wrist.

We have consulted with a veterinary orthopaedic specialist, a neurologist and a physiotherapist who all concur that she now needs surgery to the broken front wrist that was never treated at the time of the injury . It’s beyond returning to full functionality but doing a surgery known has an Arthrodesis Fusing of the joint will relieve her of the pain. After a period of a few weeks of restricted exercise she will need a specialist physiotherapy program.

Her vets bills so far are close to 2000 euros and we can no longer absorb this cost and she needs the surgery for our final hope that we can give her quality of life back and most importantly she will be pain free.

Please help Summer, she has overcome so much, however her veterinary costs are ongoing and without this surgery she will continue to suffer. At the moment she is on pain medication and her operation will be in 2 weeks’ time. No donation is to small and please share.Podenca S
