Regular readers will know that I have been appealing for help for the Canary Island podencos since I first created my blogs back in 2007. A prohibitive factor in the adoption of Podenco Canarios is the cost of flights to mainland Europe for forever homes. In the past three or four years there has been an explosion of publicity for these fabulous hounds, largely due to facebook pages. I’d like to introduce another Lanzarote group who are helping hounds in the Teguise area. Huella y Huella – footprints.
‘Huella a Huella is a group which raises awareness, sensitization and well-being in general to the animals in Lanzarote from schools to those working in the field of animal protection and promotion of awareness-raising actions.
So we want to create a set of which all form part, institutions, associations and citizens, and together, bring this great project to term.
Through information campaigns concerning the laws of protection, approaches to educational programs in the schools for responsible ownership and the creation of empathy with animals in children and young people, actions leading to the display of the hunting dogs as pets, elaboration of projects aimed at the achievement of the objectives of the Association, advising the Government on the protection of animals generating awareness of a need for conversion of kennels in hostels, design campaigns of promotion of sterilization, production of leaflets, brochures and informational posters for dissemination of protectionist objectives and promotion of the welfare of animals, diffusion of the actions of the Association, collaboration with other associations whose purpose is the protection and aid to animals… will be as we achieve this objective.
At present we collaborate with the municipality of Teguise, advising on the protection of animals, achieving improvements in facilities where shelter abandoned animals, establishing protocols for adoptions, creating awareness and promoting adoptions, waiting for that little by little the rest of the municipalities to become aware and they are making the same changes that these are already being applied in its forms of action and awareness regarding the protection of animals.
At the moment we currently need help for Kio, a young hound who is very nervous and would benefit from foster and adoption. Contact us if you can help him.’
See the video here of the shelter and Artax – notice the wounds on his body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p3ru00S5mo
There are also 2 very young podencas, Tiger Lily and Buttercup, only 2 months old.
