For those of you who haven’t seen these before, two videos of ‘kennels’ where podencos are kept on Gran Canaria. Estimates are 85,000 podencos on these islands, most living in horrendous conditions on the breadline, disposed of in horrendous ways at the end of hunting in December each year.

its disgusting the way these poor souls have to live what a horrid life and on top of that a horrid death for the majority of them the breeding as got to come into effect this is shocking
Beryl, I have not looked at the videos but have seen some before which were very distressing. I didn’t know how many podencos there were on the Canaries. These poor dogs. I just wanted to ask which countries adopt the pods from the Canaries? I think it is more expensive to bring them the uk but don’t understand why. Is it harder for the pods on the Canaries to get adopted? I appreciate that it is very difficult for all pods but was wondering if it especially hard for pods who live there.
It is especially hard for the podencos on the Islands, especially the Canary Islands more so than on the Balearic Islands. This is because there are more of them and unless a kindly expat adopts one, they are not rehomed there. Germany takes many for homing but it is expensive. For example. Two dogs travel with 1 passenger – so the associations have to find a passenger willing to ‘travel’ with two dogs and ensure they are handed over to the rescue association at the airport destination. Then there is the cost of the microchip, vaccinations, sterilising. Add to that the cost of the flight. For the UK you are talking in the region of £600+. An event was recently held on facebook to raise the £700 to get a podenca from Lanzarote to her adoptants in the UK. The couple had been on holiday in Lanzarote, found the starving podenca and taken it to a dog pound and contacted an association for help as they wanted to adopt her. The money has been raised and she will go to her home in the UK. But you can see it is expensive for each dog and this is why most of them spend the rest of their lives in a shelter.
maybe if in the future if any one truley is interested in adopting a pod from the canary islands and finds it hard ot get the air fair together maybe we could all ship in every little helps just an idea
