On 29th June I posted a plea for help for help for a podenco mom and her puppies. Bev Farmer liaised with PodencoWorld in Holland and Little Pod Foundation to save the family. Bev tells the story.
‘I saw the post on Facebook about a Dutch family arriving on holiday in Malaga only to find a Podenco had just given birth to a litter of Pups under the BBQ. They had contacted many of the local refuges but there was no space available and the only other solution was the local Perrera, who advised the family that they would destroy the mum & puppies.
The family could not accept that and kept trying to find somewhere safe for them. I noticed that Podencoworld had left a post so emailed them for further information, then called Little Pod Foundation, who of course said to me ‘get them to us, we will take them’.
So, all arrangements were put in place and, because Malaga is 550 km away, an agreed meeting point in the middle was made. It was necessary to bring in a specialist to help catch the mum as she wasn’t very trusting of people, then a phone call to say we are ready and everybody was on the move. The family who found her insisted on bringing the Mum & Puppies so it was nice to be able to meet them and they also donated money towards her care.
Now pleased to report Sally the mum is doing well and her puppies are very healthy all 8 of them. However there is a twist to this tale. The same day they arrived a Podenco gave birth to a litter of puppies by caesarian. The owner kept the three biggest female puppies and asked for the other 5 to be destroyed; we dont even know if the mother survived.
Thankfully the vet didn’t follow the order; he contacted someone who took the puppies and began bottle feeding them. Sadly four of them passed away after a couple of days so we introduced the last one to Sally and she took him under her wing. He is doing well, although needs additional bottle feeds, but we go day by day and hope he gets stronger.
This is a joint effort with Podencoworld Netherlands (click on ‘select language’ on top left of page) and Little Pod Foundation, so for further updates please go to their websites.’
