The dangers of dog walking too many dogs at one time – how many is too many?
In the UK, with more people adopting dogs during lockdown, the number of dog walkers has increased. This ‘profession’ is totally unregulated, anyone can set up as a dog walker which can have disastrous results, as happened last week (Jan 2023) in Caterham, Surrey, where a dog walker was walking 8 dogs at the same time.Reports state that the 8 dogs included 2 daschund, a cockapoo (mongrel by any other name!) collie and a Leonberger, none of the breeds on the Dangerous Dogs list. What a contrast between the dogs, and most of them were from different households. Personally, I fail to see how one person can walk 8 dogs of such a diverse range in size and temperament. Add to this, the woman was walking them on a public common, rather than in an enclosed area or on a private field.

Podencoworld working with Podencos in Gran Canaria
WORK IN PROGRESS * PODENCOWORLD TENERIFE * ELY FROM “VIP” DOG TO DOG FOR ADOPTION!Some poor podencos are so traumatised by their treatment at the hands of the hunters that it can take months and months of patient work to gain their trust in humans again. Ely is one such podenco with Podencoworld Gran Canaria.
‘Now the moment is finally there, Ely is ready for adoption! Maybe not with every family, of course he will remain a special soul with slightly longer instructions than dogs without a backpack, but we have decided unanimously that our dear Ely is ready for the next step!
Ely trusts people more and more and more and now just goes for a walk with new volunteers who are still strangers to him. It takes him a while to trust them, but it’s all good when he sees the belt. The curiosity and especially the will to live of this nice guy wins over the uncertainty more and faster and we really see him grow every day. He wants to so bad! With the right guidance, patience and home routine we think he will thrive very quickly. We really hope that he will get this opportunity with experienced people. He has come so far and wants so badly… he just deserves that chance!

Protectora de Animales Arume – Podenco Truan waiting forever for someone
Protectora de animales ARUME are appealing for a forever home for Podenco Truan – the ‘Eternal Forgotten’.‘Truan is a wonderful dog, small size, very young, friendly, loving, sociable, good and grateful. But he was born Podenco, and only for that reason his chances of finding a home are reduced and they make him INVISIBLE.
There is the belief that “hunting” dogs do not “use” to live at home and that they do not adapt, nor are they happy if it is not hunting. And nothing is further from reality (we’re not talking about locking them in a flat but giving them a full life, with safe and quality exits. Any dog can be completely happy living in either a flat or a house with a farm or garden provided the time is given..)
There are more active dogs that enjoy going out to the mountain for a run, others are more of a blanket and couch. Well, the little ones gather all those qualities together!!! Perfect dogs, SUVs, that adapt to any family and enjoy both being out in the countryside and a warm nap in bed.

Storm Damage at Galgos Rescue Almeria – help needed to fund repairs
A couple of nights ago we suffered a storm and strong winds which unfortunately caused a lot of damage to our Rescue center. A large part of the fence has been torn loose and our storage space has been completely destroyed.
In addition to our usual daily tasks, we now have days of cleaning up debris. A solution will also have to be found for the storage space.

Protectora de Animales in Arume – helping hounds in Galicia
It’s not often I find stories about podencos or galgos in Galicia in northern Spain but I’ve just come across this small protectora of 2 ladies who work with the local animal kennels to try and home the poor lost souls who end up behind bars. Please read their story here.
‘Behind Arume we are two women who have been rescuing animals for many years. Looking the other way doesn’t suit us, and little by little we became entangled in this wonderful, but also hard, adventure that is to dedicate your life to animals.
We carry out our work in O Carballiño, helping to find families for the animals that arrive at the kennel, to prevent their stay in it from being extended. We are volunteers, that is to say, we are not labor related to the kennel, but we work with the officials who manage it to prioritize the most urgent cases (puppies, grandparents…) and expedite their departure, without forgetting all the others: young people and adults who many times they become invisible, and we try to make them visible through our social networks to find them a home as soon as possible.’
Shortly there will follow the story of Truan, a podenco they have been trying to home for a year.

Volunteer at a Spanish rescue shelter
On a very rainy day at my home in the UK it’s that time of year to think about holidays and summer sun. Many Spanish shelters welcome volunteers to help with the care of their rescued hounds and it’s very rewarding. Many first-time volunteers return again and again.
This link is to the galgo and podenco rescue associations by country – many Spanish ones are listed – for both mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. Please contact them direct, you will be welcomed with open arms.
