Rosemary Macdonald tells about the latest rescues with the PEPA animal charity in Valencia.
‘This is Mamma about a year and a bit old the amazing wonderful girl that we rescued after we found her feeding three different sets of puppies only two of them hers, she is now ready to go to a new home she is without a doubt a wonderful dog she is well mannered loving eager to please and she gets on well with other dogs.
Many of you kindly donated to Clare to help her pay for the surgery needed for Podenco Angel, badly injured in a road accident. Sadly he gave up his fight for life in the morning of 5th November, with Clare’s loving arms around him. Here Clare tells the story of the other canines in her life.
‘I have 33 dogs. Should I repeat that? Yes, 33 dogs! Don’t ask me how it happened, it just did!! It wasn’t a choice, it wasn’t planned, it just ‘is’.
I split up with my partner back in December 2011, and moved into a log cabin with my little Spanish mish-mash butterfly dog, Mama, and my large Siberian Husky, Blue. A nice little family group, don’t you think?! Then I had the bright idea of adopting a large dog for security, as I had loads of garden and a decent sized house, so no problem with space and I would feel more secure.
As usual, my recent visit to Spain was full of action and, even better, rescued dogs! You can read about my visit to ACTIN on this link. From there I spent a couple of days with Bev and Warren and their 26 podencos at the finca they recently moved to. Most of the podencos are waiting for their forever homes, including Solo and Carina. Little puppy Sky and his best buddy Rembrandt already have adoptions arranged, as does Dave and little Maneto Lily. Please contact Bev if you would like more information on her podencos. Lina Orta is one of a group of volunteers who help the dogs that the town council worker takes to Hellin perrera to be killed. There are two podencos in now, waiting to be sacrificed. Their names are Chispo and Rubius.

Two podencos – the little podenca puppy (the taller brown) is still inside but no one asks for her. She is loving and very curious, super funny with hazel eyes, if you look you see the pain that she feels.
The petite podenquita tan, is female, six years old, the owner does not want it, too old to hunt. She is a bit timid, but she’s a lovely dog, loving and kind. Hopefully someone will notice her.
(Pic below) The Galgo has left but the smooth Ibizan is still there. She is young, super affectionate, gentle and playful, about 8 months old.

Urgent appeal for anyone with room to take this injured podenca and her pups – there are at least 4 little puppies. It’s cold and wet. They are on an industrial estate in Murcia, along with a cream male – the 2nd video shows the difference where people will feed a dog if it’s not a podenco or galgo! Update on Vida after the operation – incredible what these hounds – and the galgos – survive! Foster home urgently needed to continue with medical care and rehabilitation. It’s at times like this I wish I had a small house in Spain to use for this purpose!
