  • Seville & Valencia – young podencos needing homes

Sevillel podenco 250 9 11 2012Two young podencos desperately needing foster and forever homes. The young male Ibicenco is no good at hunting, so the hunter is going to kill him along with a couple of Breton Spaniels who he says also are no good as hunters. Please, can anyone take him, he’s only 2 years old. He looks thin and frightened. He’s in Entity, a village in Seville. Contact

And this white beauty, Nana, is only 3 months old, found in the middle of a road in Poblet, Valencia. She is so good, quiet, submissive but cheerful. Seems good with cats, loves other dogs and people. The appeal for a forever home for little Nana, as the foster home is only temporary and she will have to go to a shelter, which is no good for a puppy. Contact m12casom@uco.es jose@uco.e

  • Helping a chained dog

White podenca chained 190 8 2012There is a belief in Europe that guard dogs should be chained up. There is also a belief in Europe that any dog can be chained up, many of them without even shelter. I see it here in France – a border collie chained up in a farmyard particularly angers me. Podencos also suffer this maltreatment and Aaniferira, a Portuguese animal rescue association, have published a piece about dealing with the problem. You can read more about it here.

  • La Rioja – more than just winery tours – Animales Rioja

Riona CLINT 250 3 2012Clint is a beautiful rough haired Podenco Ibicenco who was rescued from the Rioja perrera. He has a problem with his sight, probably because in his past life he has been kept in the dark.

Little Podenca Andaluz Rubia (see below) has also been rescued from the perrera; she is very thin and malnourished. She now seeks a warm house where she can recover and be beautiful!

These two podencos are with Animales Rioja, along with Cloe, another podenca. If you can help with vet fees etc, or adopt either of these deserving souls, write to animalesrioja@gmail.com

  • Podenca Andaluz Tamy – in cheap hotel accommodation in Spain

Badajoz perreraTamy 250 podenca 1 2 2012Poor dogs. They try their best for their masters – and mistresses – and are rewarded by being dumped – anywhere – busy roads, down wells, on the campo with broken legs, in the killing stations. Killing stations – barking dogs, stressed dogs, some of the worst perreras don’t believe in feeding dogs to be killed, water is green – I’ve the reports and photos on my weblogs. Read about Tamy, on death row Badajoz perrera.

  • Gran Canaria Winter Sun Holidays – Roque Nublo nightlife

Gran Canaria podencas 250 5 2 2012Gran Canaria for winter sun holidays! Great! So long as you close your eyes to all the abandoned dogs and cats roaming the Island. These three podenca bitches have been in the camping/picnic area near Roque Nublo since November. The only survive on what they can retrieve from the visitors. A concentrated effort is being made to catch them but, as you can imagine, after all this time, it won’t be easy. TARA shelter on Gran Canaria sent the news. I’ve asked them to let me know if the podencas are caught. And if you go on holiday to Gran Canaria, go and see the shelter at Mogan, they are always pleased to see people interested in their work.
