  • Podencos off leash – Dog Parks in Germany

I came across this video, of particular interest because it begins with podencos and a cat happily together in a home and moves on to podencos running free off leash. I don’t speak German but have now got a translation of the story on the video.

  • Adaana – please help the ‘invisible’ podencos find forever homes

Adaana pod 2 250 1 2014Appeal from Adaana – if their rescued podencos don’t soon find homes, they can’t help the others already on the street needing taking to safety. Here’s what they say.

‘We’re getting near February, and we know that with the end of the hunting season we’ll suffer a new wave of “hunting tools” dropped everywhere, while those which we already rescued remain invisible, without finding a home.

I send you a collage we made to promote them. The main photo is of Podenco Friends in Murcia, in the other photos: Miga, Amber, Lucía, Chance, Shabie y Bonsai. Real beauties!! More here.

We are already receiving requests for help for other podencos who, like them, have been used and discarded, but we can’t do more, especially if our rescued don’t achieve to find their new homes.

Help us to break this spell that makes them invisible, help us to promote them.

Amber was seen by a college of us with her owners and a lot of other podencos, hunting in a forbidden area. She approached them to tell them they shouldn’t be hunting there and they left. Amber caught her eye, because she seemed so young and clumsy… the next day she saw Amber on her own, and the next, … she was scared, but as the days went passed she got more confident and now she’s understood that there’s nothing to be scared about, and she’s a wonderful dog.

Adaana pod 1 190 1 2014Miga was during nearly a month following in the distance a girl every time she walked her dog, she looked skinny and harmed. Between this person and a few neighbors they kept feeding her and trying to catch her, and at last, they achieved to catch her and they took her to the vet: she had a peculiar wound in her mouth, and the vet said it’s quite usual in the area, that hunters drop them with their mouth shut so that they aren’t able to hunt, but she was lucky to manage to get rid of it. Also, she was pregnant (we’ve sterilized her).

Though she walks perfectly on the leash and she accepts manipulation, she’s still quite scared, and she prefers to remain in the distance if possible.

  • The Invisibles – every home should have one!

Bebe and galgos 250I’ve been writing and publicising about the podencos for several years, since I started helping a French rescue association bring galgos and podencos from Spain to France for rehoming. I’ve fostered many and helped rehome them too, plus adopted one of my own, seen here with my galgos.

In general the galgos get more publicity because of the huge numbers abandoned every year, especially hung in the olive groves. But life in Spain for the podencos was and still is no different, just not in quite such huge numbers. And life for the podencos on the Spanish islands got and gets very little publicity atall. Which is why I have worked to help them too.

The podencos used to be called ‘The Great Forgotten’ but in the last couple of years there has been an ‘explosion’ of interest in podencos, mostly through publicity on facebook.

  • Valencia perrera – 2 podenco puppies – please help

Valencia 2 bros 6 months old 250 5 2013Valencia pound. On death row. Two brothers, about six months old, precious and super friendly. They have honey-coloured eyes. One is a bit more suspicious than the other, are very funny because if you tell them things, the one on the right will wags its tail and get belly up and give kisses, because he wants to come, but as his brother is more cautious (I’m sure on the street he has survived thanks to him) he tells his brother not to come, and is constantly taking care of both.

Hopefully someone can help the two together because they are very close. One without the other could not survive on the street. They are identical twins. Will be tall, because they are still puppies, appear to be Ibizans.

  • Cheap accommodation in Tenerife, Canary Islands – food and drinks not included

Podencos Tenerife 250 3 2013Two stories from PodencoWorld in Holland. To read in English, click on the Translation button top left hand side, drop down menu, click on your language.

The first one is about 12 podencos living in appalling conditions on a farm in San Roque, Tenerife. The foundation Animal Help Canarias reported the poor state of the hounds on a finca. The way the animals are crammed in the back of a private estate, continuously chained without any room to move. The precarious facilities do not meet the necessary hygiene and dogs have “not even enough food or water,” said a spokesman for the foundation. “Neighbors often call these situations to denounce”.

  • Valencia perrera – Podenco dumping capital! 2 more need saving

Valencia perrera 3 females arrive 250 2 2013These 3 females, 2 of which are podencos, arrived that way in the perrera to be dumped by owner. All affectionate, all CESE which means they are fast track to killing, the perrera does not have to hold them for 20 days because the owner has signed them over to be killed.

A third podenca dumped there at the same time, look at the injury to her, plus her teats – she’s obviously had lots of babies…apparently the injury has been treated. But then the bastard took her to be murdered!

  • Seville – podencos for hire for hunting!

I’m still stuck in the UK because of snow, and struggling to post. Here’s a story I received earlier this week, emailed on to associations I hope can help, and now post you the story. Apologies though, as I’m using a computer which won’t allow me to post pix.

‘On January 6, 2013 I drove with my husband and adopted dog (from a perrera near Malaga, ‘El Paraiso’) from Tarifa to Seville, and on to Cordoba.

We stopped at a rural restaurant for coffee where I became aware of a whole lot of dogs crying somewhere in the vicinity.
