  • TheKennelKlub and Podenco Friends – saving the Lanzarote podencos

Bev Sarifa Lanzarote 400 10 2016Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends is now helping Laura Johnson of TheKennelKlub with the Lanzarote podencos. Here’s what Bev writes.

‘A picture that says a thousand words……. So many podencos are subjected to such a harsh life they are never loved or treated with kindness like we do with out own dogs. They don’t get to sleep on a sofa o,r a comfy bed, if they are lucky they are are held in cages where they can sleep on the ground. Many don’t even get this, they are restrained on chains 24 hours 7 days a week only released when taken out on a hunt. Then they are abandoned if sick or old, for its much cheaper to get a pup or younger one, than pay for veterinary treatment.

The Podenco face two battles, a life of subjugation and then a lack of adoptions for they are not viewed suitable as a family pet, the odds are really stacked against them. On the Island of Lanzarote Podencos have been discovered in the most deplorable conditions held in holes in the ground with no natural light, left there for days with stale water and no food. This is 2016 and why this is allowed to continue is beyond me, and with the power of social media today, few people know about the breed outside Spain.

I can not imagine what goes through their minds when they are handed into a perrera, thrown into cages or corrals with other dogs they have never encountered before. Exposed to other dogs that may carry sickness or disease, fights break out over food for they are fed in hoppers, the strongest survive so many others never eat. It is without doubt a very stressful situation for them. These could be their final days on this earth, for once the perreras are full they have no choice but to euthanise and Podencos are at high risk due to the lack of potential adoptions.

  • From Perrera to Finca Podenco Friends, Murcia – meet Perla

Bev Farmer tells the story of Perla.

Perla arrived on Friday 35d July 2015 and we have given her some space but yet another Podenca terrified out of her mind. This is not fear from a change of circumstances, this is from a deeply rooted sustained abuse of some type. She will need many months of help and support to break her out of this world of terror she lives in.

In the last 3 months we have taken in 5 podencos all very similar issues and it cant be just because they are nervous by nature. Dogs learn by association the positive and the negatives and if treated badly for long enough, establish what hurts them is to be avoided.

This video is to say thank you to everyone for believing in us and allowing us to realise our dream. A year of a thousand tears and a million smiles. Times when we were overwhelmed and it all felt too much…. then those magic moments when anything seemed possible. So many of you have reached out and helped in so many ways without you we could not have achieved so much for this forgotten breed of Spain.

Together we saved so many … together we gave them a future. We will never ever be to able to express how grateful we are to each and every one who supported us

  • Podenco Friends, Alicante – who cut the hole in the fence?!!

Bev Bella Nestor him 24 hours away 250Regular readers will know of the incredible work done by Bev Farmer and Warren Beards of Podenco Friends, in Alicante. I have the pleasure of visiting them in September 2013, sharing their lives with the rescued podencos and seeing the devotion and incredible work they do for these maltreated yet fantastic hounds.

They live in a finca inland in the middle of the campo with very few neighbours – those there are live in the distance! They have a good relationship with the local galgueros, many of whom cannot believe the cruelty others inflict on these fabulous hounds. So it is with a heavy heart that I read the following report by Bev – luckily this time with a happy ending.

  • The Eye of the Devil?

Henna Denzil eyeA beautiful, sometimes sad, heart-warming story of podenco adoption from Hennie.

‘Actually it’s the eye of Denzel, my ‘beloved’ dog.

He can frighten people very much and half the population of our village walks on the other side of the street when they see Denzel coming. A lot of them ends with their face on the street when they pass by with their bicycle. They blame me for it but after years of hard working, on a friendly and sometimes a little less friendly way, Denzel doesn’t change.

He was found as a puppy in Spain dumped in a dust container together with his brother.

  • Molly, Foxy Lady, Dave and Tilly – Podenco pals in the UK

Dawn Richardson 4 pods 250 6 2014Another delightful rehoming story, this time from Dawn Richardson, about her 4 podencos. She regularly takes them to dog shows where they are winning plenty of rosettes.

‘I came across Molly our 1st Podenco cross in January 2013 by accident. A friend had invited me to a facebook site called Costa Blanca Dog Homing as she knew we were looking for a dog after losing ours 7 years earlier. I spotted Molly on the site when I saw her photo from Little Pods. Lots of emails later and we reserved Molly pending a home check. The nice lady arrived and gave me lots of info regarding Pods as I never knew or heard about them before. Molly arrived with us in May 2013, and tiny, nervous little girl, but it was love at first sight. Molly soon became more happy & confident but seemed a little lonely.

  • Podenco Friends – finding forever homes for rescued podencos

Bev Alexa 250 5 2014Two lovely stories from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

Alexa what a story…. discovered in a remote location in Valencia heavily pregnant. Its not always straightforward to catch them especially in open land and couldn’t give her any sedation due to her pregnancy. Silvia Guau Guau and her team kept us updated and then one day she disappeared for 3 days no sign so she must have given birth somewhere. We never expected how dramatic her rescue would become.

A few days later she was sighted badly injured an attack from a wild boar a call went out to the Spanish community in Valencia and people came forward to help. We got a message they had caught her but could not find the pups what did they want me to do. I had to make a judgement call and say bring her she needs medical attention if we left her, both Alexa and the pups would perish.

  • Valencia podencos – together forever

Bev esme Nacha on arrival 250When I visited Bev, I met two of the 50+ podencos rescued from a hellhole in Valencia. Their necks bore the marks made by the chains and collars. After rehabilitation with Bev and Warren, they have now both found their forever family. a wonderful happy story!

Bev writes. As we prepare Nacha for her big trip to America to Sallie Lisa and her team at Grateful Greyhounds Inc. there is another twist to this story. One I had secretly hoped for and this week it has become a reality. We got confirmation that Nacha will be reunited with Esme and these two Podencos will never be separated again. Martha Feltenstein, who has already adopted Esme, was at the airport on the 5th December to welcome Nacha and take her home. This fantastic ending to such a sad story has only come about from the co-operation and team work of so many people.
