  • Podenco Friends – finding forever homes for rescued podencos

Bev Alexa 250 5 2014Two lovely stories from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

Alexa what a story…. discovered in a remote location in Valencia heavily pregnant. Its not always straightforward to catch them especially in open land and couldn’t give her any sedation due to her pregnancy. Silvia Guau Guau and her team kept us updated and then one day she disappeared for 3 days no sign so she must have given birth somewhere. We never expected how dramatic her rescue would become.

A few days later she was sighted badly injured an attack from a wild boar a call went out to the Spanish community in Valencia and people came forward to help. We got a message they had caught her but could not find the pups what did they want me to do. I had to make a judgement call and say bring her she needs medical attention if we left her, both Alexa and the pups would perish.

  • From Spanish Perrera to Italian forever – happy Bimba

Ida Gaudenzi Bimba lying 250 1This is Bimba and she is now a happy podenca living with Ida Gaudenzi in Italy. Ida tells the story.

‘She came from the rescue Dejan Huella. She was little more than a puppy, around 1 year old, thin as a rake. I saw her picture online, she looked so lost. Her body language meant sadness, that hopeless attitude abandoned dogs have about them.

I contacted the rescue, they couldn’t believe I was coming from Italy to pick her up.
With the help of my good friend (and now Bimba’s Uncle) Giorgio we organized the airplane trip from Milan to Malaga, then to Cordoba with a rental car (he did most of the logistic work while I dealt with the rescue). Same on the way back, with a connecting flight in Rome.

  • Podencos off leash – Dog Parks in Germany

I came across this video, of particular interest because it begins with podencos and a cat happily together in a home and moves on to podencos running free off leash. I don’t speak German but have now got a translation of the story on the video.

  • Podencos Ria and Inca – finding forever together in Italy

Alicia Andrews the girls 250Alicia Andrews lives in Italy and has two rescued podencas. She is now involved in helping to rehome podencos, especially from Lanzarote, Canary Islands. She tells the story of how she became involved with the podencos.

‘When my last remaining dog died back in January 2013, he left a huge hole in my life. I’ve loved animals from the time I was born into a household where there were always rescued dogs and birds around. So when Peanut left me to run over the rainbow bridge and join his mother and siblings (or, at least I like to think that he did), I felt “lost”. Who was going to leap excitedly around my legs when it was time for a walk?

  • Living with Leishmania – a podenco’s story

Livia in the perrera head 250 2012 2Livia’s Journey through Leishmaniasis and what I learned along the way

    by Anne O’Connor

Livia came from a perrera in Zaragoza, in the north of Spain. The photo here was of her there in February 2012. She looked like a small old little lady who had had a very hard life. She had what looked like a touch of mange and conjunctivitis, but nothing in the way of illness that I felt I couldn’t handle. Her face was tired, she was the little lonely dog in the corner. Looking at her I knew that I could give her the life she deserved.

However Livia’s blood tests revealed that she was in fact suffering from Leishmaniasis.

  • The story of Clare – The Crazy Dog Lady!

Clare Roberts Me & Alma dog show 250Many of you kindly donated to Clare to help her pay for the surgery needed for Podenco Angel, badly injured in a road accident. Sadly he gave up his fight for life in the morning of 5th November, with Clare’s loving arms around him. Here Clare tells the story of the other canines in her life.

‘I have 33 dogs. Should I repeat that? Yes, 33 dogs! Don’t ask me how it happened, it just did!! It wasn’t a choice, it wasn’t planned, it just ‘is’.

I split up with my partner back in December 2011, and moved into a log cabin with my little Spanish mish-mash butterfly dog, Mama, and my large Siberian Husky, Blue. A nice little family group, don’t you think?! Then I had the bright idea of adopting a large dog for security, as I had loads of garden and a decent sized house, so no problem with space and I would feel more secure.

  • Podenca Andaluz Bebe – rescued injured from a Seville motorway, safe in France

Bebe 250 2012 001Podenca Andaluz come in 3 sizes, small, medium and large. My podenca Bebe is a miniature – weighing in at a mere 6 kilos aged 10 years. She was rescued injured and traumatized from a Seville motorway over 4 years ago by my friend Marisa, a volunteer with El Refugio Escuela. My vet operated on her leg and saved it and she is now the fastest little dynamite on 4 legs! The only time we see a handicap with her leg is when she goes down stairs – she carries her left leg. You can see the scars on her hind quarters where the hair has never grown back. Adorable little dog! Here on video at lunchtime. Scrounging, not me! Nudging your leg to remind you I’m here – not me!
