  • Podenco Solo – a VERY happy ending

Solo with Warren 250 10 12 2014Readers of my blog may remember my appeal in July 2013 for a forever home for Solo, here’s the story.

I met the little chap when I visited Bev and Warren in September 2013 – and now there is great news. He has now set off on the final stage of his trip to a forever family of his own. The bestest Xmas present ever for him! Sad for Warren and Bev to see him go after so long, thank you for being there and taking him. Bonne Chance Solo, enjoy the rest of your life.

  • The life of an adopted podenco – what they all deserve

A lovely video of a Podenco Canario from Tenerife now adopted in Belgium.

  • The Eye of the Devil?

Henna Denzil eyeA beautiful, sometimes sad, heart-warming story of podenco adoption from Hennie.

‘Actually it’s the eye of Denzel, my ‘beloved’ dog.

He can frighten people very much and half the population of our village walks on the other side of the street when they see Denzel coming. A lot of them ends with their face on the street when they pass by with their bicycle. They blame me for it but after years of hard working, on a friendly and sometimes a little less friendly way, Denzel doesn’t change.

He was found as a puppy in Spain dumped in a dust container together with his brother.

  • Princess Beatriz – from the streets of Valencia to idyllic Devon

Beatriz Ellie 1 250 8 2014Always a pleasure to publish a happy rehoming story to illustrate what fabulous pets podencos make. Re-introducing Beatriz, Ellie updates her story.

18 months to two years have passed since I wrote an article about Beatriz the podenco.
Beryl kindly asked me for an update.

Rescued off the street in Valencia on a business trip, I wrote about the perils…and joys of adopting a pod’ (which breed wise I knew next to nothing about at the time).

Having been through the experience, (and gently encouraged by my bank manager to do so), J suggest people do not adopt dogs off the streets in Spain, or directly from a pound, but go to one of the many, and wonderful refuges and rescues, both in Spain and here in the UK. They have podencos and galgos and bodegueros and Spanish Water dogs and everything crossed and in between! They know the dogs, can match you up – lifestyle wise – and offer all the invaluable and essential help you will need when adopting from abroad, or in the UK.

  • Molly, Foxy Lady, Dave and Tilly – Podenco pals in the UK

Dawn Richardson 4 pods 250 6 2014Another delightful rehoming story, this time from Dawn Richardson, about her 4 podencos. She regularly takes them to dog shows where they are winning plenty of rosettes.

‘I came across Molly our 1st Podenco cross in January 2013 by accident. A friend had invited me to a facebook site called Costa Blanca Dog Homing as she knew we were looking for a dog after losing ours 7 years earlier. I spotted Molly on the site when I saw her photo from Little Pods. Lots of emails later and we reserved Molly pending a home check. The nice lady arrived and gave me lots of info regarding Pods as I never knew or heard about them before. Molly arrived with us in May 2013, and tiny, nervous little girl, but it was love at first sight. Molly soon became more happy & confident but seemed a little lonely.

  • Surrounded by Podencos…adopt one

Janice Ball pods 1 250Another lovely rehoming story, from Janice Ball, who proves that podencos are addictive – you can’t have just one, you need more!

The story of how I came to own 4 Podencos is down to me joining facebook, until then I had never heard of a Podenco! I started to see them on various rescue sites and then I spotted Suzi who had been in kennels for over 2 years and no one had enquired about her, she really touched my heart strings and I just fell in love with her. I adopted her there and then and she came over in 2013. She has been with me now a year and she is the prettiest most loving dog ever who greets all her fellow brothers and sisters every morning with kisses and licks. She loves all people and dogs but is not too keen on cats or birds as she sees these as something to chase as she has almost certainly done a bit of hunting at some point in her past life in Spain.

  • Nell and Navarre – Podenco Andaluz find forever together

Robin Grover 1 250With all the appeals for help for podencos, it’s great to have a lovely rehoming story. Robin and Ros Grover share theirs with you.

    Our Podenco Story

We have had dogs over many years and mostly 2 at any time. In January 2013we had 1 mixed breed dog called Honey, and we were considering a second dog. At that point we had never even heard of a Podenco. We started casually searching dog rescues on the internet, and amongst that found some of the Podenco related rescue organisations. We had never imagined that you could have a rescue dog brought over from Spain and weren’t aware of the quarantine laws being changed. We could see the difference between the rescue dog situation in this country and the awful conditions in the Perreras and the terrible short life expectancies in those. We were horrified by the attitudes of the galgueros, and the medieval views on animal rights held by many in Spain. We knew we had to have a Poddy.

  • From Spanish Perrera to Austrian Heaven – Podenco Leo’s story

When I visited Bev and Warren of Podenco Friends in Murcia in September 2014, I watched the glorious game of hide and seek and catch-me-if-you-can between a tiny podenco puppy then called Sky and a larger 5-month old Podenco Ibicenco puppy called Rembrandt. Now you can read Sky’s story – now called Leo – written by his forever Mom Alex Frederikson.
