Podenca Canario Mami – saved from starvation on Gran Canaria
It’s easy to overlook that the popular holiday desinations of Ibiza and the Canary Islands are also part of Spain. Whilst Ibiza is quite close to the mainland, the Canary Islands are down in the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa. Life on these islands is hard for the animals – many used by tourists – whilst hundreds of others are used for hunting. Luckily there are rescue associations picking up the pieces, but the only hope of a life for an animal outside an animal shelter or refuge is to be adopted on mainland Europe.
This is the story of Mami, a Podenco Canario, whose mouth was taped up before she was dumped in the mountains on Gran Canaria, abandoned to a slow and painful death.

Podenca Pup Lucia – already packed a lot of living into her short life
Galgos del Sol in Murcia have just taken in this cute little podenca puppy, about 4/5 months old. Just look at those fabulous ears! She’s been named Lucia, a beautiful name for a beautiful baby. Petition the Spanish Government – fight for the galgos and podencos of Spain
In partnership with Urgence-animaux, le Bulletin Des Lévriers has launched a new worldwide petition to ask for the ban of hunting with Spanish Greyhounds (Galgos) in Spain. In 2009, we sent the 20.000 signatures which we had we collected thanks to Care2 to the Spanish Minister of the Environment. Let’s mobilize again to show the Spanish government that people around the World do not give-up on abused Sighthounds in Spain and that ill-treatments, very real, of Galgos and Podencos in Spain has to stop. Cordoba – podenco puppy, abandoned, starving, please rescue
This podenco puppy was found yesterday by a young woman out walking; she heard some barking and discovered him, very skinny and covered in ticks. She took him some food, but has no room to take him in. Please can anyone take him, before the hunters do….The site is not a place for him…Please can someone do a host, he’s all alone …

TARA Association Gran Canaria – 14-20 September – cats/dogs neutered free
If you live on Gran Canaria, Brian from TARA association has sent this message, about having your cat/dog neutered for free.
‘From the 14th through the 20th of September Danish Friends of Animals volulnteers, Dr. Javier Castellano (County Mogan Vet), TARA volunteers, and animal support groups and volunteers from around our wonderful island will be working side by side to neuter up to 250 abandoned dogs and cats for FREE!
Over population of dogs and cats on Gran Canarias leads to the death of tens of thousands of unwanted, unhomed animals bred by humans to be domesticated – needing humans to survive and thrive. Neutering is an important part of the solution.

Help Blind Podenca Katy recover her sight – an appeal from Valencia
This is podenca Katy; she is blind; she is lucky to be in the safe and caring hands of Silvia of Galgos Connection Spain, and her marvellous vet. This is what Silvia says about Katy.
‘This is Katy, she is a special girl with a huge problem in the eyes, she needs an operation because her eyes are turned, the iris is inside; if she has this operation, there is every possibility that she will recover her sight. As always, please help towards her vet fees, we have many dogs in the pension needing our help. If someone can help please do it, Katy deserves to see the nice part of life.

Malaga podenca needs forever home – adopt a podenco
Last week I introduced you to a young podenca bitch rescued from starvation on the streets of Malaga. This was her story.
The picture you see now is of Canela today, what a difference love, care, regular food can make – in just one week. And isn’t she absolutely stunning. Here’s what Charl says about her now.
‘Canela is a podenca of a fawn type interesting colour and white, slightly rough coated. She has a tiny little face and huge ears! Rescued 2 weeks ago, she came with very very dry skin but now this is much better. She is negative in Filaria, Erlichia, Leishmania. Vaccinated, and will be sterilised, approx.4 years.
