Brian Baptist is a volunteer with TARA, an animal rescue shelter in the beautiful port of Mogan on Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. He’s passionate about the podencos on the island and the hard life they have. Here’s what he writes.
‘Canario Podencos are a breed of canine that evolved from goddesses and gods of Egyptian folklore. If any canine is god-like, it must certainly be the Podenco. They are beautiful beyond belief – ethereal in presence and physicality. Despite their reputation as a hunting dogs, they are in truth just about the best family pet for whom a human could hope.
How many of you travel to the Canary Islands in search of sunshine, sand and sea. But do you know what goes on behind the scenes, everyday life for the people and animals who live on these islands year in and year out?
It’s extremely difficult for the podencos on the Spanish islands to find forever homes. Their only chance is on mainland Europe. Some of them are adopted in Germany, a few in the UK. Here are some of the beauties at the SARA Protectora shelter on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.
An abandoned galga was wandering around Torre Pacheco in Murcia, a chord hanging from her neck. A podenco befriended her. He was named Denzil. This is the story of his capture and that of the galga. Check Galgos del Sol about Denzil. What a stunning podenco he is. Read an update on him here – he is already doing obedience classes….agility classes next….championin the making?
Here is a fascinating article about the Ibizan Hounds on the island of Ibiza, some of which are being used as PAT (Pets As Therapy) dogs. In England my greyhound Molly was a PAT dog and we used to have great fun visiting a retirement home – folks used to love to talk about dogs they had owned, and Molly really enjoyed birthdays when she got to share the cake!
The article also explains the other activities which young Ibizan Hounds can be trained for – search and rescue, agility and so on. Podencos – whatever type – are not just for hunting or simply a companion dog. Since they are active working dogs, using them for PAT, agility and so on can enhance your ownership of one of these fantastic dogs.
There is a list of associations on Podenco Post which specialise in rescuing and rehoming podencos – please give a thought to offering one a forever home.
Please watch this video and support Beatriz in her protest to the Mayor and Council of Getafe.
This story absolutely sums up the attitude of men – police officers, council officers, hunters….in any European country. I have to say I’d be willing to pay that money to any bastard who abuses an animal – I’d soon be broke!
Madrid calling – this beautiful podenca needs an association to find it a forever home. She’s a little beauty, shy but not fearful, gets on with children, other dogs, loves to play, very sweet. Can anyone help find this sweet soul a forever home? Contact cotulorenzo@hotmail.com
And this is a desperate plea from Cordoba, to help this little Podenca Andaluz —
It’s a stray, young, injured, please can anyone take it in?
