    Less than 3 WEEKS TO GO! And over 500 people and 300 dogs signed up over the 3 locations

    Once you are signed up via the website and have provided your mobile number, you’ll be invited to join a WhatsApp group for your location. Once a week, we’re sharing details in those groups of the route, meeting point etc along with other key info.

    Nearer the time, we’ll use those groups to provide other important updates and more detail of the day. It’s our only way of communicating with you all so please look out for WhatsApp group invites. If you are signed up but haven’t had an invite, please message us and we can help

  • PACMA – need politicians to fight for animal rights in Spain

    From PACMA we want to inform you that we are going to file a criminal complaint following the regrettable events that occurred on Friday 03/01/25 at the Granada Royal Herald parade, where a man kneed an ox in the face in front of dozens of children.

    Many people have asked us how it is possible that there are still so many animals involved in these shows: the answer, although painful, is that the new animal protection law excludes practically all animals that are not dogs, cats or ferrets and as long as they are not for hunting or work. This excludes oxen, camels, horses, sheep, cows and other animals unfairly called “production animals”.

  • Fuerteventura, Canary Islands – hell for podencos

    Life for podencos on the Canary Islands is hell. Shelters do their best but no one on the Islands adopts podencos and it is expensive to fly them out to Europe to forever homes.

    For six months, the 4-year-old Podenco dog Kala has been hanging on a chain in Perrera on Fuerteventura waiting for her human. Especially a torture for a Podenco with a great need to run. Kala weighs 18kg, is not castrated and shows himself good and social in the Perrera. Video of Kala, chained up in full sun with no water!!

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – looking back on 2024

    Epiphany, Three Kings Day, the end of the Christmas period and the day to look back for the last time and close 2024.

    First of all, we would like to thank all our partners for the wonderful collaborations. Thanks to joined forces, some 163 sweethearts were able to leave the shelter and start their new lives. New or renewed collaborations were also established with Italy, Lithuania, England and Germany.

    In February we were able to pick up our GRA van that was fully sponsored by Greyhounds in Need 🇬🇧 for which a huge thank you.

  • Looking back on 2024

    So another year draws to a close. Another year when the Spanish government has done nothing to protect the hunting dogs, their over-breeding, the cruelty of the galgueros, using them just as a hunting tool and discarding at the end of January when hunting in Spain finishes each year. Thousands abandoned in the campo, dumped in perreras, dumped outside shelters.

    One difference in my 15 years involved with the plight of the galgos and podencos is that there aren’t the hangings in olive groves which there used to be. The bad publicity has possibly been one influencing factor, plus the increase in shelters and rescue associations to help these wonderful dogs to find forever homes around the world.

  • Podenco Friends – remembering 10 years ago

    This photo takes me back 10 years to a time when three special Podencos came into our care late in 2014. Each of these boys, Juan, Raine, and Zeus, arrived with a story of sadness but also filled us with determination to help them.

    Juan was found near our finca, @@abandoned in the sweltering heat of summer. Dehydrated and confused, he was lucky to have been spotted by friends who brought him to safety.

  • Asoka el Grande, Orihuela – 11 podencos rescued from terrible conditions

    Asoka el Grande is an association I have only just come across, doing amazing work for the abandoned dogs and cats of the area. Here are 3 of 11 podencos they rescued from terrible conditions, which are now hoping for forever homes.

    Luca arrives at our shelter with 10 other podencas, after living a terrible life.

    Born to breeders in the hunting world, he lived in deplorable conditions with more than 50 female dogs, breeding non-stop, fighting, without hygiene, care or decent veterinary attention.

    The number of female dogs crammed together was terrible, so we had to take in all the animals between several shelters and associations. Asoka was left with 10 podencas full of tumors, hernias, wounds… and very, very scared.
