  • SOS Podencos shelter flooded out

    Floods appeal for shelter 450 10 2024
    From SOS Podencos

Edu, the kennel owner, is alive and seems physically well but he is in shock. Nobody rescued him even if the rescue services were contacted several times for almost 12 hours. They were collapsed. So many people are trapped or missing, so only one person and dogs weren’t the priority.

Most roads are still closed but his son could go to the road near the kennel that is higher and throw him food over the fence. Some dogs were barking. We don’t know the extent of the damages and the animal deaths.

    Galgos en Familia flooding 400
Horrendous flooding in Malaga Province with many shelters flooded out. On shelter which SS Podencos works with reports the flooding is above knee height making it difficult to open kennels doors. Keep these shelters in your pravers that every animals is rescued and safe.

Dear friends of the Galgos and Podencos, this morning the heavy rains in Andalucia caused the dreaded flooding of the shelter! The water rose and entered the inside kennels and a great effort by the volunteers saved 40 galgos, podencos and 2 mastines. The dogs were frantically moved to safer ground as the shelter is near the river bed. The dogs went into foster homes and to the residencies we use for the Male Galgo Project. They are all safe. Praying the rain lets up soon! The damage will be evaluated when they can go back in but for sure loss of their washing machine and dryer, and possibly stored food, medicines etc as well.

They may even need rental equipment for cleaning purposes.

We are asking for donations for this emergency situation!

  • Advice for dogs frightened of fireworks

    I HATE FIREWORKS!!

In the UK there is an ancient ‘tradition’ of fireworks on 5th November, from when Guy Fawkes planned to blow up the parliament building in London. As the decades have gone by, there are more nights of fireworks in the 5th November falls in the week. So this year, 2024, we have fireworks on 31st October, Halloween. Then fireworks the following Saturday and Sunday, as well at 5.11.

Our dogs are terrified of fireworks. In fact, most of our dogs in over 70 years of dog ownership have been terrified of fireworks. Tablets from the vet, sprays around the home, none of them work effectively, the dogs’ hearing is too sensitive. I’ve seen a calming collar in the local Pets at Home store which I’m going to try this year, but I’m not holding my breath!

Here is some advice from the Dogs Trust if your dog is terrified of fireworks.

  • Join PACMA to fight for the animals of Spain

    PACMA logo 400
On 15 October PACMA began a decisive and ambitious campaign: they want to add 500 new members before January 1, 2025.

    They say…

Why? Well, we intend to develop four major actions for next year, and your membership is necessary to make them a reality:

    1. Lower veterinary VAT: We want to launch a campaign to reduce the cost of these services, today a luxury for many families.

    2. Strengthening sentences for animal abuse: We need firm and effective legislation that prevents cruelty to animals and forcefully punishes those responsible. We want to deploy all means of pressure to propose a new reform of the Penal Code.

  • Another tiny Podenca Mildred hoping for a forever home

    Mildred 400 10 2024
MILDRED, 4 years old, petite podenca of 9kg. OK CATS

Localization: At the shelter in Spain and adoptable throughout France and bordering countries, she will be brought back to France by an animal transporter

She is a very affectionate with adults and children. She gets along with all her peers regardless of size, as well as cats.
Mildred walks perfectly on leash and is not scared or car sick.

She’s a pretty active little bitch, not surprising for a podenca. This will be the perfect bitch for an active family to enjoy games and walks with. Hope she finds her forever quickly!

  • Walking through the Camp by Marta Navarro Garcia – against hunting with Podencos and Galgos

    Plataforma galgos pic 400

    From Plataforma NAC

The minor hunting season begins and with it starts hell for thousands of hunting dogs in Spain.
One more year we watch helplessly how they are used as mere tools and how they are discarded, broken, injured, hungry and, in the worst case, lifeless.

In these moments of sorrow, we share the wonderful poem by Marta Navarro Garcia read at the protest on February 6, 2022

    WALKING THROUGH THE CAMP

I have seen death looking for my friends,
    hundreds of winged beings,
    of deer, of wild boars,
    of rabbits, of partridges,
    of greyhounds, of Podencos.
