    Valentin 4 2025 300
Older dogs can be just as rewarding as younger ones. Especially suited to a home with older people who prefer gentle walks and companionship. Introducing Valentin, who fits the bill.

La Sonrisa Peludo says – Grandpa VALENTINO (11 Years) “lived” all his life as a long sentence at the hands of a devil galgueroL….years of Lockdown…. He never had a caress, it takes patience to helpit.

No one has shown any interest in him, is he to be sentenced to end his life in a cage? Is there no chance for him?

  • Blind Podenca Victoria seeks a special home

    Blind podenca 4 2025 350
Victoria is blind. And she is in an asylum. A place full of noises she can’t place, smells that confuse her, stress from other dogs that she can’t avoid. For a dog that can’t see, life out there is downright scary.

She has no panic, no trauma, no aggression — she is just gentle, sweet and affectionate. But she lacks what every animal needs: peace, safety, stability.

Victoria is not a dog that you “just save”. She is not an impulse adoption. But if you have a warm heart, and feel that you can only give that little extra… then you get an incredibly sweet dog for that.

Email me if you are interested and I will pass your name on to the contact.

  • 2 Podencos in Cuenca hoping for forever homes

    Cuenca podencos 1 3 2025 350
CUENCA PROVINCIAL HOSTEL – LES INVISIBLES

    CHOCO & KRISPY

CHOCO is a beautiful chocolate-colored podenco with shiny fur almost 4 years old; he has two at the Cuenca Provincial Animal Shelter. He walked in with his brother Krispy; a hunter got rid of them. KRISPY looks like a desert fox. He’s a sandy coloured pod, a little shy due to his rough past.

At first they were very afraid, they didn’t let themselves be touched. This has improved in the years they have been at the hostel. Krispy is the most unsuspecting of the two brothers. He doesn’t bite, but he does keep his distance, he is precautious.
Therefore, whoever decides to adopt them as part of their family, will have to have patience and respect their needs and rhythms.

  • Blind Dog Rescue UK – foster homes needed

A few of days ago I wrote about our blind podenco Bo and his stomach cancer. Bo came to us over 3 years ago from Blind Dog Rescue UK via Ibizan Hound Rescue in Spain.

All animal rescue value foster homes and blind dogs are no exception.

Kathy Orton of bdruk says –

We are looking for foster homes in the UK. As a foster you will help our most vulnerable dogs, allowing them to come to the UK to live with you until they find their forever home, you can still foster for us if you have resident pets, we will match a dog suitable for you.

  • Stomach cancer in dogs

    Bo face 1 400
    Living with a stomach tumour

This is our blind podenco Bo (Bocelli) who we adopted in 2022. In 2023 he had a small tumour removed from his stomach. We were warned it could return. He is the third of our Spanish hounds to suffer from stomach cancer. Galga Sahara had an inoperable one many years ago and galgo Bracken had one in 2021, not long after our return to the UK after living in France for 19 years.

In February 2025, 2 years later after diagnosis. Bo’s stomach started to swell again. A scan at the vets confirmed our worst fears – the tumour had returned and this time it was judged inoperable, as it could be attached to either the spleen or the liver.

In himself, Bo was his usual happy cheeky self, eating normally, playing with our other podenco. But as his stomach swelled, he hadn’t the energy to go on the long walks of previous years.

  • Lanzarote – Podenca Pirata desperately needs a forever home

    Lanzarote blind pod 1 350
Podencos in the Canary Islands find it difficult to find forever homes because of the cost of flying them to mainland Europe. But they deserve forever homes as much, if not more, that most podencos. This sweet podenca is hoping for her forever home soon.

PIRATA female 2 years old, Podenca Canario very sociable and affectionate, LOOKING FOR A NICE FUTURE. She can travel

SARA Protectora Lanzarote say: ‘A few days ago we gave a talk about animal protection and welfare at the Official Reef Language School. To this talk we were accompanied by the sweet PIRATA, this beautiful podenquita who charmed everyone present asking for cuddles at every step. As the talk was in German and Pirate isn’t very good at it, she took the opportunity to greet everyone and show them how good, caring and noble she is.

Contact SARA Protectora about Pirata or any of the other podencos they have hoping for forever homes.

  • 22nd March – World Podenco Day

World Podenco Day 22 March 350
    From Bev Farmer, Podenco Friends

Today, March 22nd, marks World Podenco Day in Spain!

On this day we pay tribute to a breed that embodies nobility and pride, yet often endures a harsh reality in Spain. Many Podencos are subjected to unimaginable conditions, deprived of the respect they rightfully deserve.

Tragically, countless Podencos spend their lives confined in dark buildings, underground caves, or chained to walls, with nothing but rancid water to drink. They’re expected to run tirelessly until exhaustion takes its toll, only to be discarded when they’re no longer deemed useful.
