  • Radio Seville publicising a warning to animal abusers, especially galgueros and cazadores

Galgueros and galgos 250 12 2015Translation of an article by Polly Matthewson, a podenco passionata with whom I caught up at the PAES conference in Murcia in October 2015.

‘Some positives, even if still very very small, steps forward for animal welfare in Spain. Now animal abuse can result in prison sentences, whereas until July 2015 there were only fines. Here’s a rough English translation of this article titled “The hunting season begins with more punishment for animal abuse” which was published on the website of Radio Sevilla 13.11.15.. For Spanish speakers you can hear the full interview recorded on that webpage too. This is a start.

  • Cheap accommodation in Spain for Xmas – stay in a perrera

Bev podenco pups 250 1 12 2015The waste of precious life by the bastard Spanish hunters just beggars belief! Here is the story from Bav Farmer of Podenco Friends.

‘Four podenco pups handed into a perrera this morning (1/12/2015), 8 weeks old. This is no place for them to be, it’s cold and they are vulnerable to disease. We ca’nt leave them there, they will not survive. So they will be with us in a couple of days. For the moment they have been removed and are in a foster home so they are safe. So it begins, dumping of the pups and I am sure more to come. Merry Christmas!’ podencofriends@hotmail.co.uk

  • Living the dream in Spain?

Alejandra podencos field 250Life in Spain and the Canary Islands is hell for the majority of podencos. Here’s a heart-rending situation some young Spanish volunteers have discovered and they desperately want help to help the dogs…chiefly to get them into shelters (which are mostly full to bursting) and fund some operations. Alejandra tells the story.

‘I’m writing you from Sagunto, a small town on the outskirts of Valencia, desperately asking for your help due to the situation we are living.

About a month ago some girls and I found a group of hounds and hound crossings living in a extreme situation,

We found right away around 25 adult dogs between 6 months and 2 years old. 3 of them had recently given birth, with a total of 18 puppies only a week old.

  • The Story of Izzy – happy ending for a failed podenco huntress

Izzy 3 170Michelle tells the story of how she came to offer a forever home to podenca Izzy.

‘It started with a photo. Not a great nor clear photo, but poignant and heart-breakingnever the less. It was of a tiny female Andalusian hound chained to a wall in a filthy Spanish cellar. No windows, no bed, just damp concrete to sleep on and a rusty dirt encrusted water bowl that was bigger than the dog.

The reason – she wasn’t good at hunting, and like many Spanish hounds in her position, she was thus regarded as trash. The luckier ones are rescued, but many are abandoned, hanged, burned alive, thrown down wells, or stabbed to death. She needed someone to offer her a home, otherwise she would most likely have suffered one of these fates.

  • Help needed for 2 young podencas in Jaen

    Fabienne Lola 3 170
This is an appeal from Fabienne Thys for help with two young podencas…they need foster and forever homes. Is there anyone who can help. These are their details.

Lola is living in the courtyard of a member of our association. We think she was pregnant in the summer but she disappeared before having her puppies. She reappeared last month (October) and alone.

Rubi is literally on the streets. She is being fed by some people but is very scared and hard to be approached. We need help to catch her and for somewhere for her to go in foster to help her adjust to life in a home, as she is in danger on the streets, both from an accident or getting pregnant again. A kennel will be no place for her.

Both podencas are in Jaen, Southern Spain and contact info is the following:
