  • Peaceful Protest, London, 1st May 2016 – support with your rescued Spanish hounds

    Peaceful protest Bebe 250Podenco Alliance in the UK were planning on a peaceful protest at Windsor in March for the visit of the King and Queen of Spain to the British Royal Family. The visit has now been cancelled (probably because Spain has been without a government since December 2015 after national elections failed to produce a clear winner). So a new Peaceful Protest has been organised in London on 1st May 2016. Below are the details so far. Please put the date in your diary and join the peaceful protest if you can, especially with your podenco.

    Our new date is May 1st – Day of the Podenco. Keep your photos and texts coming so we can make more photocards to hand in, and please join us with your dogs on the 1st in London or online.

  • Podenca Angelique in Lanzarote – a lovely surprise

    Do you remember Angelique/Tata, the podenca in Lanzarote who was badly beaten about the head by her cazadore? Well, here’s the latest news.

    It won’t come as a surprise to many of you to learn that Natalie and Martin (foster Mummy and Daddy) have decided to officially adopt Angelique – she could not have wished for a better home! If you haven’t heard of Angelique’s story please have a look on this link. She was found after wandering the streets for 3 days in horrific condition, she had three fractures to the skull and lost both of her eyes.

  • Spain – a land of contrasts

    There is a ‘discussion’ on facebook about Spain, expats, volunteers, on the subject of animal welfare and rescuing and rehoming dogs. I have copied the comment below by a Spanish lady, which I think sums up how most of us feel about the problem, especially at this time of year now hunting is finished and galgos and podencos are dumped and abandoned and killed in their hundreds of thousands.

    Spain is the land of contrasts. Being one of the worst countries in Europe when it comes to animal welfare, it is also the place where an army of private individuals work as hard as they can 24/7/365 to save the lives of the 150.000 abandoned animals every year.

  • Portuguese Podengo – two lovelies needing forever homes

    Portuguese Jackie D Mother1 250Two beautiful Portuguese Podengos needing forever homes. From Jackie Dias.

    ‘A friend of mine recently rescued this Podengo mother and her son. The mother (see pic)is a young adult and the youngster male is about 5/6 months old we think. They are placed in the north of Portugal close to Porto. Please contact: Jackie Dias jb.dias18@gmail.com if you can give either of them a place in your home and your heart.

  • A Plea, a Please, to Keep a Meaningful Thing – Hound Sanctuary USA

    From April Lamb. Dear Rescue Partners and Rescue Advocates,

    Hound Sanctuary (USA) recently purchased, moved to, and retrofitted a much larger, more dog-friendly facility in order to have more room and more joy for more podencos, galgos, and others while we prepare them for and select their perfect forever homes. The sanctuary comprises a 5000 square foot building on about 2 acres of land that includes two very large yards, a medium sized yard, and a small yard, all with 6 foot tall, secured fencing.

  • Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert – saving the podencos in Sevillia

    FBM Bashira 1 250 1 2016Here are stories from Levriers sans Frontieres about 2 podencos, now safe with Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert in Seville, and who will eventually come to France for forever homes.

    Here’s the story of the first one, Bashira. After she was found at the roadside, throughout the journey to the shelter, she has not moved, not cried. she is so courageous and yet what she must suffer! She was rushed to the vet for urgent operation. Upon her arrival she was supported by Lillian, the veterinarian at the FBM, who took xrays. The legs are fractured, put in splints whilst waiting for an operation by the orthopedist. Under anaesthetic, her injuries have been disinfected and she was given antibiotic. This tiny podenca is barely a year old, what a terrible start to its life.
