We continue to operate our rescue in the context of the very bad legislative amendment enacted in 2023. A new and very ambitious update to the animal welfare law in Spain was passed in January 2022. The law itself includes training for dog owners, penalties for animal cruelty, prohibition of puppy farming and sales of pets in pet shops. All of this is totally laudable and
necessary. However, the PSOE Party (Spanish Socialist Workers), the senior partner in the coalition government, subsequently proposed an amendment to the law to exclude hunting, working and guarding dogs. The amendment was approved in 2023. Commentators say the PSOE initiated the amendment fearing reactions from rural voters.

Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – the Scooby Van
The Scooby summer newsletter is 12 pages long. Sadly they don’t have anyone to put it on the Internet available for me to link you to it. So over the next few weeks I’ll be posting parts of the newsletter here. The first part – there are 9! – is about the Scooby van which suffered front end damage. No photos to post as I can’t save them from the pdf file.‘ The Scooby Van
Our van is back on its wheels! For that we are very grateful to a grant-funding body we contacted to help us make up the shortfall left by the insurance claim. Even though we were not at fault in the accident, the insurance policy paid only part of the cost of the repair.
And it was a big one! In addition to the damaged wing, we needed a new chassis. Our supportive mechanic and owner of our local Iveco garage restored the van to full working order within the most costeffective budget he possibly could.

3 rescued podencos – donations needed for transport to shelter
These 3 podencos have been rescued and transport is arranged to take them to a shelter.‘UPDATE: We have an asso who will take care of them but we have to pay the transporter: €130 for all 3 dogs. Once again, we need your help.Update, so far 80 euros has been donated so we need 50 euros more.
Three stooges – all puppies. What can we say? Their looks don’t scream at us. Fear, panic, despair… We can take them out, break the chains that torture them. We are looking for an asso to offer them this waiting family and godmothers to help with their rescue.

Podenco Friends Appeal for Esca and Hope vet fees
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends. Regular readers will know that over many years Bev has helped hundreds of podencos, and it’s not often she asks for help with vet fees. Please support her on this appeal.
‘Esca & Hope.. They are both due their annual reviews.
Most of you will know that Hope was born with problems with her back legs basically her patellas are at the back of her knees. The tendons and ligaments in her back legs never fully developed and are like stone but it’s never stopped her getting on with life, she is 10 years old this year.
Esca was caught in an animal trap which snapped around her front leg, it broke the radias close to the wrist, she also lost about 50% of her tendons and ligaments. Living on the street for weeks heavily pregnant, too much damage was done to the ligaments and tendons, they were beyond repair.

Podenco with severe leishmania needs help
This is a story from a young Spanish volunteer Pepa Tenorio about a poor abandoned podenco. Imagine ignoring a dog on the streets in this condition – what is wrong with some Spanish people?!‘Paola is a girl from where I used to live who asked me for help a few days ago for this poor guy… No words needed, apparently, the GNT of the people has been seeing it like this for more than 2 years, and until today NO ONE has been dignified to lend a hand…. As far as I know, it’s the second case in 2 months that an animal appears in this state, exactly the same, half blind and almost certainly devoured by leishmania… the previous case had to be euthanized, nothing else for the vet to do… what’s going on in this area???. I see a lot of humans and little humanity.

Galgos del Sur – 15 podencos rescued from a rehala hellhole
From Asociación Galgos del Sur‘At the beginning of May 2024 we rescued 15 podencos of the Hornachuelos rehala. They all came in bones, malnourished, wounded and full of parasites. They had been through hell. Luckily they are already getting the best care.
We need urgent help. We owe €25000 in veterinary clinics. We just can’t take it any longer. Over 130 dogs rescued in 4 months and 150 at our shelter.
Mawi was confiscated from Lucena (Cordoba) rehala. If we hadn’t gone to his rescue he would have starved to death along with other dogs from the same litter. He’s so much more recovered now.
