  • Valencia Floods – SOS Podencos update

    SOS Podencos 400
From SOS Podencos – at one point the water was waste deep.

    31/10/2024
Most of our dogs are out of the kennel and placed into temporary foster homes. The two remaining are inside the house that is in the kennel, and they will leave today.
There are still other dogs in the kennel that aren’t ours, but it seems the legal owners don’t want them to go into foster homes..

Now is the time to clean, fix and rebuild!
If you can come help, it will be appreciated.
Here is a video of the state of the kennel. It’s full of mud and water. The fences are broken, ripped from the ground. All the dog food is gone. The dog beds are gone or broken.

  • 2 legged podenco

    2 legged podenco 400 10 24

    @protectorabiosbardos

Today we ask you something very important for someone very special. Some people who follow us years ago know who Cas is, for the new we explain, Cas appeared run over in the year 2015, the fractures were very severe and after many surgeries finally had to amputate both legs on the same side, we always bet on him despite that the recommendation was euthanasia, in these nine years he proved us that we did the right thing by living a full and happy life, without any kind of restriction.

Now Cas is starting to get older and needs a chair adapted to his needs, which is very difficult as it is not a normal case, we need someone who controls and knows how to make him adapted to him. Recently we saw a post from @mbenzespana that his engineers had made one, We make this post to get a chair that allows Cas to walk and make his life a little easier. We ask you to share the post to have more chances that this year Cas gets his much deserved Christmas

  • SOS Podencos shelter flooded out

    Floods appeal for shelter 450 10 2024
    From SOS Podencos

Edu, the kennel owner, is alive and seems physically well but he is in shock. Nobody rescued him even if the rescue services were contacted several times for almost 12 hours. They were collapsed. So many people are trapped or missing, so only one person and dogs weren’t the priority.

Most roads are still closed but his son could go to the road near the kennel that is higher and throw him food over the fence. Some dogs were barking. We don’t know the extent of the damages and the animal deaths.

  • Devastating floods in Malaga province – shelters flooded out!

    Galgos en Familia flooding 400
Horrendous flooding in Malaga Province with many shelters flooded out. On shelter which SS Podencos works with reports the flooding is above knee height making it difficult to open kennels doors. Keep these shelters in your pravers that every animals is rescued and safe.

Dear friends of the Galgos and Podencos, this morning the heavy rains in Andalucia caused the dreaded flooding of the shelter! The water rose and entered the inside kennels and a great effort by the volunteers saved 40 galgos, podencos and 2 mastines. The dogs were frantically moved to safer ground as the shelter is near the river bed. The dogs went into foster homes and to the residencies we use for the Male Galgo Project. They are all safe. Praying the rain lets up soon! The damage will be evaluated when they can go back in but for sure loss of their washing machine and dryer, and possibly stored food, medicines etc as well.

They may even need rental equipment for cleaning purposes.

We are asking for donations for this emergency situation!

To donate go to www.galgopodencosupport.org say for flood.

PLEASE HELP our friends at Galgos en Familia in their time of need!! Thank you!!

  • Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – Animal Rescue Transitions To ‘Bureaucrazy’

    Scooby shelter from above 400

    Fermin writes.

As many of you know, the Scooby shelter grew organically from doing the best we could with limited resources and still
making tangible improvements for our rescued animals, nursing them back from the brink to overcome sickness and
adversity to become dogs and cats well enough to go to loving adoption families. Yes we had tragedies but our small team
shared the work and helped the animals to a better life. I still remember a volunteer vet from Scotland, in the twilight of his
career, telling me to welcome volunteer vets but crucially to make sure they had solid experience because in a ‘field’
medical setting, she said we’d need people who were skilled to work with what’s available, rather than the early career medical professionals who would not yet be ready to work in a situation needing ingenuity and technical resourcefulness. I still remember this vet stitching by candlelight when we were blighted with power cuts.

  • Podenca Gaia – lost her babies, dumped in a Fuerteventura perrera!

    Gaia German 400 8 2024
The approximately 3-year-old Podenco dog has had to go through everything in her life.

Gaia and her babies were rescued by an animal welfare colleague in Fuerteventura. The owner was a hunter and dumped the babies in a hole in the ground so that Mama Gaia couldn’t get to her babies (videos about this in the comments). He said he didn’t want them anymore, the babies aren’t Podenco’s but mixed breeds, that’s what he said. The puppies have now all been adopted, but Gaia is still in the Perrera!!️

Gaia is very social with all the dogs, she even takes care of newly arrived abandoned babies. Gaia is still very cautious and reserved with people, and needs some time to trust new people. The stressful environment takes a lot out of the beautiful dog and we hope that she will soon have the chance to be with experienced and loving people. A quiet environment would probably make a big difference for Gaia and she could learn at her own pace , to let go, to gain trust, and to enjoy life on the sunny side.

  • Protectora Scooby – costs of running a shelter

    Scooby shelter from above 400
From Fermin – Scooby Shelter Running Costs: Veterinary

We have a number of running costs to keep the Scooby shelter perational and thought it would be worth focussing on different
internal cost groups to demonstrate how much we rely on your donations and how we spend the money you give us. In this
newsletter we highlight our veterinary costs.

We are fortunate to have our onsite clinic and our own vets. Our vets are salaried and we can present them with most of the medical conditions we come across as well as all of our spays and castrations. Sometimes we have to refer veterinary work to specialists or off-site vets but generally we rely on the skill of our Scooby vets.
