  • Breach of copyright

It has been drawn to my attention that an extract from my book From Pyramid to Perrera has been posted on SOS Podenco Rescue and The Pod People on facebook.

Kindly note this is in direct breach of copyright. No permission was sought for any extract from my book to be used in any form as clearly stated at the beginning of my book. No credit is given to my book, the source of the piece Characteristics of a Podenco is not stated. Whilst I do not have the funds to sue the perpetrator on both her fb pages, it should be noted that this is a gross contravention of copyright issues about which the perpetrator doesn’t give a damn!

Whilst my information in the article is accurate, the perpetrator on occasion posts misleading information about podencos and people should not believe all she writes by her own hand.

  • Important Warning about Cani Leish

Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends has passed on this word of warning about Cani Leish. Cani leish was launched in 2012 a vaccine developed that was supposed to prevent dogs contracting leishmania. Shenever bought in to it and never had any of her dogs vaccinated with it. Read this and it will explain why there is a petition to have the vaccine withdrawn here in Spain.

‘We are propietors of affected dogs or dead after administration of CaniLeish and people concerned about the health and welfare of dogs. We want this drug gets withdrawn by its apparent high level of toxicity, and so they stop hurting dogs.

  • Malaga/Estepona area? Puppy training courses at In The Doghouse

Calling people in the Malaga/Estepona area of Andalucia. If you have any puppies which qualify, get in touch with Nando Brown of In The Doghouse.

‘We run a rescue pup course where pups around 10-14 weeks stay with a dog trainer for 5 days, do training, get socialised etc in the hope to get them rehomed – all with Nando. Have you heard of any pups around Malaga area that are in rescue that could take part? The last few have been really successful, a lot of the trainers have taken the ones they had, or helped find homes for them. Be awesome to get some Galgos or Podencos on the course.’

  • Insuring your podenco – share your experience

On a recent post on my Podenco Post facebook page, a question was asked for help with insuring a podenco in the UK. Below I have posted the thread of the conversation. If any of you have experience which you can share, please do. (Each paragraph is a comment by a different person).

‘Some breed assistance with insurance please. Hope a Spanish Podenco three year old came from mainland Spain. Tesco pet insurance is classed as an Ibizan hound cost £12 month. Theo a Podenco Canario from Lanzarote, they want to class as a Cirneco dell’Etna same age cost £27 a month. They are now looking into matters but I suspect many of you are far more knowledgeable with the breed so any help you can give will be appreciated and any info on who you use to insure your poddies?

  • THE INVISIBLE KILLER IN PET FOOD: MYCOTOXINS

Posted on the Living with Leishmania page on facebook. Regular readers will have read Ann O’Connor’s article on her experience with her podenca Livia. Here’s what she says about the above subject.

‘Here is an interesting article on the dangers of molds that grow on plant proteins used in animal food, like kibble…”These molds are potent carcinogens which have been directly correlated to adverse health effects, resulting in both acute toxicity and chronic health problems in pets; problems such as liver cancer, in many animal species.” I think this could compromise a leish positive dog’s immunity seriously. This article focusses on the US pet food industry but it would be interesting to see if there are similarities in other countries.

  • Best way to help podencos? Join an existing rescue association

Malaga pererra pods 1 250 1 2014It’s depressing how many hundreds of podencos are abandoned and dumped in perreras every week – as with the galgos, there is now no let up during the summer months after hunting ends..,Podenco facebook pages are full of gorgeous podencos needing forever homes…I simply can’t post them all here!

One new development in the past 18 months which does concern me is that, with photos circulating on Facebook of podencos in perreras, some people who live outside of Spain are trying to organise rescuing them and putting them in kennels, sometimes with negative results. Unfortunately this can give podencos a bad name and it’s not good for the dogs themselves.
