  • Update on Podenca Summer with Podenco Friends

    Bev Summer 400 17 9 2018
You may remember in December 2016 I published the story of Podenca Summer, who arrived in the UK with a bad leg problem. The UK vet wanted to amputate 2 legs (can you imagine the stupidity of such a suggestion?!!) and Bev and Warren of Podenco Friends took her on and have worked with their Spanish vet team to save the legs and give Summer the chance of living out her natural life. Here’a an update from Bev.

‘An update on Summer … we have tapered her pain meds by 50 % and she is coping well and we will continue to reduce. She is able to run around the paddocks but if she does too much then she holds up the leg. This surgery can take a few months to settle and Summer seems much happier in herself, I believe her being in less pain.

We now can start on aqua therapy for her which will be a big help, her gait is still not 100% but better than before and she may always walk a little wonky. As long as she is happy that is all the matters.

  • Adopt a podenco, make their life complete

    Podenco poster 400 14 9 2014
We podencos are house dogs, not hunting dogs. Don’t let us be left behind and forgotten.

  • Podenco Friends – why they continue to work for the Podencos

Bev Farmer and Warren Beards of Podenco Friends…amazing ambassadors for the rescue and rehabilitation of podencos thrown away as trash by the Spanish hunter. Here are a few videos to remind ourselves of their tireless work and many reasons to support them, whether by donating to food, vet fees, transport – or foster and adoption. podencofriends@hotmail.co.uk

  • Help needed for Pepi’s dogs

    Bill and Ben closeup 400
(Bill & Ben, podenco/basenji) Regular readers will know that over several years I have been publicising and appealing for help for the dogs in Pepis Refuge in Pedrera, Seville. Rachael Lepage is an amazing young woman living in the UK who has worked tirelessly to find forever homes for the dogs. Leash of Life is her association and here is her appeal, I hope you will support her.

‘Leash of Life need your help! As some of you may know, a few months ago the owner of Pepi’s fell very ill suddenly and we were contacted asking if we could take the remaining dogs as a matter of urgency. Which we did. A Spanish rescue very kindly found kennel and refuge space for us im the Malaga province and have spent many hours checking on them and doing vet runs etc.

So far they have cost us thousands in vets, kennel and food bills and a handful of them are still in Spain due to us not having the fosters or the funds to bring them over to the UK. We also cannot book them to the kennels we usually use because our bill is already astronomical. The rescue that helped us with them now need them gone ASAP as they are blocking spaces they desperately need for their own dogs. Given how good they have been to us, we feel awful using resources they desperately need.

  • Hope for Podencos – 2018 – Making the Impossible Possible

    Susannah Staces 1 400
    Hope for Podencos Newsletter.

‘We aren’t going to lie to you, 2018 has been challenging for the charity.

The year looked set to start off well – as Suzannah Stacey and Irene and Steve Allan had combined their efforts and opened their new centre in November. Unfortunately, all the hard work was nearly lost following the tragic and unexpected death of Suzzanah in January.

Suzannah had committed years of her life to the plight of podencos. Sadly, during her move to purchase the new centre, had not finalised all of the legal documents to secure the funds for the centre in case of her passing. This left the charity in crisis; without its benefactor/owner and all funds tied up in probate. As a result, the Allan’s and supporters had just weeks to raise €120,000.00 from scratch to save the centre, the charity and their home.

With the help of all of you, we achieved the impossible; securing the centre and Suzzanah’s legacy. We can’t thank you enough. You have proved time and again that Together we are Stronger.

  • Podenco Rene has a GCSE in – CATS!

    Polly Rene 400 1 7 2018
    From Polly Matthewson.

‘Our handsome 5 year old, middle-sized Rene podenco keeps NEARLY getting adopted as some lovely people have asked for him, but then through no fault of his or theirs it just doesn’t work out. This is getting very sad. He longs for his own family. But the good news is we now know our sweet pod is not only happy with all people & dogs, but also cats. So roll up, roll up poddie-loving cat people and form an orderly queue to adopt

    Rene on Youtube.

Help us turn Rene’s luck around. He is such a loving soul, who loves a little spurt of zoomie play with his friends, but after these mad moments he is actually quite an easy-going boy who likes a quiet sniff and to track smells at a sedate rate, loves a good snooze, he loves his food, and adores a snuggle. He also especially likes to go on a road trip!
