  • Galgos 112 – saving 70 abandoned dogs in Jaen

    Galgos 112 1 400
Galgos 112 don’t just rescue galgos. They rescue podencos too. Here’s their latest news.

‘We aren’t very good at posting numbers of our rescuers but for once, we’re going to do it at least in partial mode.

From January 1 to March 8, 2022 there are 70 dogs picked up from the street alone in the Jaén delegation. Dogs that were abandoned, many with fractures and mostly sick, some in gravity. Of these 70 dogs one is a mastin, the other is a pointer, 3 are galgo crosses, 6 are podencos and the remaining 59 are galgos. 2 have passed away, 24 have been adopted and the rest some are still recovering and others waiting for adoption.

We don’t lie when we ask for financial help or foster homes, nor when we say we can’t anymore and that we need adoptions. I wish it wasn’t necessary, but the situation of Galgos in Spain is what it is. Numbers sing though many deny it and want to shut us up.

  • The Senior Sighthound Sanctuary US – helping older podencos to a new life

    Senior Sighthound Sanctuary 400
Regular readers will know that 5 months ago my OH and I adopted 2 podencos from Spain, both 8 years old, one of which is blind.
This is an association in the US working to help these older podencos to forever homes and the good life they deserve.

The Senior Sighthound Sanctuary provides a safe haven for senior & special needs sighthounds, either at the sanctuary or through a network of forever foster and adoptive families. We also provide education on the special needs of senior sighthounds. The Sanctuary was formed out of a true love and passion for senior sighthounds. These amazing & endearing dogs take a huge piece of our heart & we would move heaven & earth for them. It’s not easy work to take in a senior hound but the love far outweighs any sadness when they pass, for their time with us is far more important than ours is with them.

    The founder writes.

‘Recently eight senior podenco girls were pulled from a shelter in Spain, all over the age of 8. It was discovered, once they were out of the shelter, that two of them are pregnant. All of these girls have led hard lives at the hands of hunters, usually being bred over & over again with no vet care whatsoever. These dogs have been reserved for the Sanctuary & I’ve made the commitment to bring them here to the US to be adopted out, where they can forget the miserable lives they previously led.

Our “Invisibles” are generally dogs without a sponsoring rescue association who we help directly to get out of a large commercial rural kennels near Tobarra in Albacete province where they have landed up for a number of reasons. And of course new dogs keep on landing up there and in desperate need… the terrible reality for countless animals across Spain.

  • Refugio Kimba – podencos hoping for forever homes

    Kimba 1 3 2022 400
Refugio Kimba is one of the oldest animal shelters in Spain and they are still working hard for the Spanish hunting dogs. Here’s what they say about the Podenco.

‘Andalucian pods, Ibicenco, Canario, Campanero… so many types.

When we talk about hunting we don’t only refer to galgos, the podencos are also used by hunters until they no longer serve them and they get rid of them.

Podencos are smart, tender, loyal, they are special dogs, only those who have ever owned one will be able to understand. They are also one of the most abused and used breeds and that we also have to fight for them.’

  • Axarquia Animal Shelter, Torre del Mar – Podenco Kiwi for foster

    AAR Kiwi 1 400
From Diana McClelland – Kiwi’s story.

URGENT FOSTER APPEAL : KIWI (AAR 2498)

Little Kiwi was rescued at 8 weeks old, with wonky legs. X-rays showed that her femurs in her back legs hadn’t formed properly and she needed to grow and develop to see if she would need an operation.

Now 12 weeks old Kiwi has gone from strength to strength – the improvement in her legs and mobility is fantastic. She’s still a bit wonky but she gets herself around brilliantly and loves to play and run and cuddle and has a great quality of life and is pain free.

She doesn’t know she is any different from any other puppy and she doesn’t let her disability slow her down. She’s a small girl girl with a big personality – can you help us to help her by fostering? AAR will provide everything you need and will cover all her vet bills and treatment.

  • Akira Animal Sanctuary – Podenca Lolita hoping for a forever home

    AKIRA Lolita 400 3 2022
    From Haylay O’Brien

‘Lolita is a sweet girl has been with us for a couple of years. She is definately eager and waiting for her forever home. She is ready to get back out into the wide world and start enjoying life with a family.

Lolita is easy to walk on the leash and enjoys a little roll on the grass. She has grown massively in confidence and has a gentle soul. She is good with children . She does however only really enjoy the company of male dogs. She really deserves a chance and so we hope someone will see her posts this week and fall in love.

She will need a bit of patience, as mentioned above Lolita has lived for several years at the shelter. So important that her potential adopter accepts she will need time to decompress when she gets home. We think she will quickly blossom and even more of her cheeky personality will shine through. Lolita has been sterilised, vaccinated and has a microchip and passport.

Please contact us on akirashelter@aol.com or whatsapp/call +34 657 689 567 for more information, to arrange to meet him or apply to adopt. Lolita can travel if required please contact us to discuss.

Read more about her on this weblink.
