Look at this gorgeous little Portuguese Podenco – she was lucky to be rescued, Portugal has a bad record for canine suffering. She deserves to live the rest of her life with a family. Please contact Dogs of Portugal if you can help her.

Leech Therapy – old fashioned remedies could be best
Plenty of food for thought in this report by Tunde Patko, on the use of leeches for healing. I will be interested to hear from anyone else who has experience of using leeches.

Princess Beatriz – from the streets of Valencia to idyllic Devon
Always a pleasure to publish a happy rehoming story to illustrate what fabulous pets podencos make. Re-introducing Beatriz, Ellie updates her story.
18 months to two years have passed since I wrote an article about Beatriz the podenco.
Beryl kindly asked me for an update.Rescued off the street in Valencia on a business trip, I wrote about the perils…and joys of adopting a pod’ (which breed wise I knew next to nothing about at the time).
Having been through the experience, (and gently encouraged by my bank manager to do so), J suggest people do not adopt dogs off the streets in Spain, or directly from a pound, but go to one of the many, and wonderful refuges and rescues, both in Spain and here in the UK. They have podencos and galgos and bodegueros and Spanish Water dogs and everything crossed and in between! They know the dogs, can match you up – lifestyle wise – and offer all the invaluable and essential help you will need when adopting from abroad, or in the UK.

Podencos in Spanish perreras – hundreds killed every week
Although I don’t post them here, there are hundreds of podencos being killed in Spanish perreras every week, most of them either puppies or under 3 years old….
Hundreds more podencos are waiting and waiting in shelters and refuges, already safe from being killed. They desperately need forever homes to make room for the ones in perreras to be saved.
Please contact a rescue association if you can offer a forever home to one of these fabulous hounds. Here’s a comprehensive list.

Portugal – new law on cruelty to dogs
Law passed in Portugal on 25th July 2014 making it an offence to hit a dog – that’s in companion dogs, not hunting dogs! Read about it here.

TAIL Torrox, Andalucia and Goldra Dog Sanctuary, Portugal – please support their dogs
Two more rescue refuges/associations which help podencos, many needing forever homes.
Tail Torrox is in Andalucia where Carole has uprooted from her London life to go and live and help the dogs – over 60 at the last count.
And The Goldra Dog Santuary is in Portugal, with over 100 dogs. There aren’t many shelters in Portugal, dogs have a terrible time abandoned on the streets. If you can sponsor one of their podencos, please help them. And publicise their work, organise a fundraiser, go and stay for a week volunteering.
