The courts of Telde no 1 have taken over the investigation from Seprona against a resident of Aquimes who kept 84 Podencos on a finca held in poor sanitary and hygiene conditions and now they have been transferred to the pound Albergue insular Banaderos .

Along with local police and veterinaries Seprona agents made the decision to enter the finca even though the owner was not present who was later notified to come to the facilities . An inspection revealed of very poor conditions for the animals that endangered their physical integrity and confirmed by a medical report of the veterinarians on site

A total of 84 dogs were seized 78 adults and 6 puppies the majority with different diseases and condition

The owner of the animals is responsible for an alleged crime of mistreatment and animal abandonment typified in the penal code.

Once they arrived to the shelter they were vaccinated and treated for internal worms . All the dogs had a high infestation of external parasites and four needed to be transferred to the veterinary hospital of Las Palmas GC for specialist treatment . Despite the dogs being in a state of stress they were able to quickly identify them and then distribute them by sex and those that exhibited more aggressive behaviour were place in separate kennels .

About 20 people attended the dogs on arrival and were supplied with the necessary individual protection equipment and strictly adhered to protocols .

For the moment all the dogs are a ward of court and will not be available for adoption Once the case is heard and hopefully the court order is lifted they will be able to be released to rescues and adopters on the island.

For now they are safe, receiving medical care food and not longer held in cramped conditions .

Thank you to everyone involved these dogs have suffered for so many years no longer Los Grandes Olvidados (the great forgotten)
