Here is an update – the latest news I have.

90 Podencos De Mogan – 4 years they have lived in hell

On 9th October 2017 court proceeding began to determine the fate of the 90 Podencos de Mogan…. Podencos that have been held in the most horrible of conditions for the last four years. Despite many petitions, marches, denuncias to the local authorities pressure from the media these dogs have been left to live this.

A previous hearing the Judge ruled the owner had to give better access to water for the dogs, otherwise he saw no issue with the conditions. A change of political parties after elections saw the case stall and yet these dogs are left to live like this with reports of cannibalism.

First the owner has to be prosecuted and his defense is that he is preventing the Podencos been left on the streets and getting killed . If found guilty then they have to apply to have the dogs removed but the owner has moved these dogs before and he could do it again.

Rescue groups on the island are asking for help and need support they need to be able to offer foster homes which will avoid mass euthansia. Currently Banaderos the perrera has 47 podencos there including puppies and are saturated, very few are being rescued or reserved at the moment.

It’s the height of the hunting season on the island so this is peak time when the Podencos find themselves handed into the perrera. When I visited in May they only had two. If the Mogan Podencos are placed there they can only guarantee them for 21 days.
