On a recent post on my Podenco Post facebook page, a question was asked for help with insuring a podenco in the UK. Below I have posted the thread of the conversation. If any of you have experience which you can share, please do. (Each paragraph is a comment by a different person).
‘Some breed assistance with insurance please. Hope a Spanish Podenco three year old came from mainland Spain. Tesco pet insurance is classed as an Ibizan hound cost £12 month. Theo a Podenco Canario from Lanzarote, they want to class as a Cirneco dell’Etna same age cost £27 a month. They are now looking into matters but I suspect many of you are far more knowledgeable with the breed so any help you can give will be appreciated and any info on who you use to insure your poddies?
What does it say on your documentation of them? (Need to check the passport of my boy) But I am sure if you pick mixed breed it would likely reduce their insurance (I am thinking that as both are recognised breeds it would increase their insurance significantly) I am with More Than – their top package and it is £15 a month – I was going to go with Pet Plan but it was £35 for their top package and when we quizzed them they couldn’t reduce it; couldn’t see the differences ourselves. Tempo is listed as a medium sized mixed breed.
The size, coat and colouring define the actual breed variation. Consult the oracle (aka the marvellous Beryl Brennan) – your photo from the New Years Day Walk is on her Podenco Post blog so see if you can find it! As Rebecca suggests, mixed breed classification is always cheaper, but you won’t get Tesco to agree to that now that they’re looking into specific breeds. You might be able to get your vet to confirm that it’s a Podenco mix – worth a try
It is the same with insurance in Holland. In their list of breeds to choose from they have Cirneco dell’Etna, (from Sicily Italy), Pharaohound (from Malta), Podengo (from Portugal) and Podenco Ibicenco. That seems to be the only kind of podenco they know about….My podencos are Canario and Valenciano…. Last year I had a podenco Andaluz in foster….. And just chose No breed/Cross for her insurance.. Many of the dogs adopted from Spain are mixes, not pure breds…
I had issues with insurances back in London – heres the thing. Just because they dont list your breed or recognise it, they cant “class it as” something else. Therefore, the dog becomes a cross or mix breed. If they didnt list Border Collie, you wouldnt allow them to class your collie as an Australian Cattle Dog instead, just because they are similar. So go with no breed/mix if they cant see a difference in breed
I agree, unless you have documentation that states they are Ibizan hound or Cirneco dell’Etna I would argue they are mixed breeds from a rescue with unknown parentage. Or go with another company and list them as mixed, it might be easier than to argue with them, as they will be losing out so might not want you to do that
No pedigree just informing them what is written on the EU Pet Passport and what they were registered as being to enter the UK.
Tesco have come back they went to the brokers and they are now happy to class Theo as an Ibizan Hound at £15.00 a month for three thousand pounds of cover. The original quote was for £27.00 a month ! Thank you all for you assistance
It’s good to challenge these things, I had no end of trouble with my car insurance (slightly different!) after agreeing a premium, company wanted to put it up a month in as they’d done some digging and found another online quote with different details! These companies can be quite devious and need to be challenged in some cases! It is a total minefield though, we sat down and researched over a 6 month period had two attempts to figure out the what and the who for pet insurance!
