Pity the Males – adopt a male galgo or podenco – they need forever too

Jerez podenco 26 03 2011 190 This article is taken from the L’Europe des Levriers website, but it applies to all rescue associations and refuges – pity the male dogs, who get overlooked in preference to femals! And even worse, pity the black dogs who get overlooked in prefencence to other colours. And yet, if you have seen a black galgo – admire the fantastic beauty of the shine on their coat, especially teamed up with a stunning jewelled collar.

Take a moment to think about this, if you might consider adopting a galgo or podenco.

Pity the male! added August 28, 2011

Our adopters deliberately shun our male galgos and podenco. Reason: females are more gentle and affectionate. And males lift their leg on furniture and flowers! We may plead their case, to no avail: the females are adopted very quickly while males languish for months in our shelters.

Ibizan Hound Central PAT dogs 250 How to kill a misconception? The males are just as friendly and affectionate as the females, if not more! It is a fact, the fruit of long experience. Trust us! Prefer a male in your adoption, especially if you have a female or if you do not have any other dogs. Consider also a Podenco. They are small dogs,(well, many of them are) very intelligent and endearing.

In late August, it’s almost open season. Currently, galgueros make their heinous trade in perreras to “try” and the males galgos and podencos are so numerous that they are fighting and killing each other because of space. They live a living hell! And waves of euthanasia hover above them like the Sword of Damocles.

This is an emergency: Watch the slide show below with our male galgos and podencos at risk. You will find them in our section “adoptions” with their description. We absolutely have to go on our next rescue in September and bring back some males…’

Darin back 250 I can vouch for the males too. We’ve fostered both male galgos and male podencos and they are, if anything, more affectionate than the females. They are very loyal, non-aggressive, ok – so they wee on the plants! They are fabulous characters – our current foster galgo adores both my husband and me – his adopting family will love him to bits. And this photo is of adorable Darin, dumped in the killing station at 11 months old because he was a failed hunter. Now happily rehomed in France and known as Bobby.

So please, think about a male – galgos and podencos are not aggressive dogs – and especially think about a black one – galgo, that is. The podencos are usually chestnut with white markings, although there are also chocolate ones too.

    Will send a photo.
