This poor soul is Esperanza, discovered shut in a shed for more than a month, sleeping on top of all her dirt and existing on bread, waiting to give birth.
Teresa Sousa is hoping to take her from her ‘owner’ today and save her from the municipal kennels where she would be pts in a couple of days. But Teresa needs financial help with the kennel fees, food and vet expenses. Please donate if you can help save this little podenca. Paypal portugaldogrescue@gmail.com
This video says it all. Warning, disturbing pictures. It was made by Podenco World a couple of years ago. If you have not visited their website, please do. They are yet another association doing incredible work on behalf of the podencos.
From Telma Shaw. ‘Since I wrote this article..Trece the Podenco Ibicenco has been homed in New Mexico and is doing fantastic with his galga friend Cyd (a super shy galga that was brought to the US by a US hunter 6 years ago. Thankfully he gave her and her mate up and they both were rehomed with this family who just adopted Trece).’
Telma is heading back to Spain this week to take back some more galgos and podencos. I look forward to hearing their story on her return.
Do you remember the appeal by Macu for help to pay for operations to restore the sight in the eyes of two podencos she had rescued from a galguero camp? Thanks to help from many people, the two dogs have both been operated on and here you can see a video of them enjoying life. Remember Atila, the young 2-year-old, had to hold his head at a peculiar angle to try and see – now he can look forward to a full life seeing everything! Both podencos are now looking for forever homes. If you would like to apply, please contact Carmina (English speaker) or Macu.
Earlier in the year I appealed for help to save an injured podenca in Valencia perrera. She was saved and is now in foster care, receiving veterinary treatment for her nasty wounds. She has been named Valentina and is in the care of Protectora des Animales Mes Que Gossos. The vet bills for her treatment have mounted up and donations are desperately needed to pay for these. I understand she has been chipped and vaccinated. Especially she really needs a forever home. If you can help, please contact Dominique, or Paypal the association at mesquegossos@hotmail.es and specify ‘donacion Valentina’. Pic below of her original injury and how it is healing, although there is still a long way to go.

With all the heartbreaking stories and appeals for podencos needing help, I thought you might like to look at these wonderful videos of podencos in foster with Bev Farmer in Murcia, Spain.
This is the 8th podenca on death row in Valencia perrera. She’s young and tiny and thin and frightened. Details to donate to save here here. Please don’t forget that after saving, money is needed to pay for kennelling and EU passport and especially to be adopted! Click on ‘8th podenca’ link for details of how to donate.
I’m now back home at my main computer and can post the photos of the 8 podencos currently in the perrera at Valencia. This little lady is not yet a year old! All females, the only male was saved a couple of weeks ago and also a white female. The black one is very unusual but sadly on CESE which is fast track to killing – on the instructions of the owner! All are very young, a couple are under a year old! Details of costs needed to save them, and also to pay kennel fees.

Many of you helped contribute towards saving some other podencos which are now all in kennels. Funds are needed to pay for the kennels and pet passports. Contact Dominique and Anke if you want to contribute.
Urgent appeal from Rosemary, who lives in Valencia region and rescued Podenca Ana a couple of years ago.
‘I rescued a beautiful white Podenco and have named her Blanca. I had been feeding her for a long time, then she got sick and I managed to catch her. She was very sick, she had very bad anemia, the vet originally said she was 3-4 years old, so I went of and found her a fantastic home to go to and the lady waited and waited for her to get better.
Last week the head vet told me that although Blanca was much better she could never be vaccinated as her immune system is just not working well and that she thinks she is nearer nine years old. Blanca also needs to be on steroids now for the rest of her life.
This meant her home fell through and now I am looking to find somewhere for her to spend the rest of her days. I cannot begin to describe how loving this girl is and how easy she is to look after.
