Spring will soon be upon us, and I’m sure your thoughts are turning to planning holidays. Why not plan a week or two helping out at a shelter in Spain? The shelters rely on volunteers to help them with the daily chores of looking after dozens of dogs – in the case of Scooby Medina, hundreds of dogs and in the case of Pepis Dog Refuge, Jane and Alan daily look after nearly 80 dogs!

Young podencos to be killed – Toledo and Almeria…
My heart is breaking…every day dozens of podencos on death row in perreras…two brothers here, only 5 months old, in Almeria perrera!! “Murtagh” y “Eragon”
Sex: Boys (brothers) Age: 01/10/2013 contact: adopcionesanua@gmail.comBut if people don’t foster or adopt, then there isn’t room in shelters to save the death row dogs. And a pretty little bitch, no good for hunting, afraid of gunshot, so her owner took her to the vet to be pts – foster home needed and then adoption. In Toledo. Such a needless waste of precious lives…(Spain) 660 43 10 16 or Aspaan Asociación Protectora Amigos de los Animales (photo below)
If any of you have ‘room for just one more’, please consider a podenco. There’s a comprehensive list of associations here.

Podencos – Enano, Maneto, Canario, Ibicenco, Orito, Andaluz, Campanero
I’ve been writing about and publicising the plight of the podencos for many years – alongside my work for the galgos. Here’s an article I wrote about the different types of podenco. Unlike the galgo of which there is only smooth haired and rough haired, the podenco varies from the Enano and Maneto which are small like a dachshund up to the large Campanero which is shaggy and used to hunt wild boar. A podenco to suit every home!

Taken to the vet for emergency treatment. Prognosis awaited. Have asked for updates (if it survives) and if it was in Fuensilada, Motril, where the beaten and shot podenca was found last year.
