  • Male Portuguese Podengos looking for forever homes

    Jackie Dias Dick 400
A couple of days ago I published some beautiful female Portuguese Podengos looking for forever homes. These are the male Portuguese podengos at the same shelter, run by friends of Jackie Dias, 30 minutes from Porto. The males are neutered and completing their vaccination programmes. They will eventually be microchipped and get an EU Pet Passport.

Information for adoptees outside of Portugal on how the best way they can ship a dog to a foreign country can be given.

Introducing DICK – (pic above) Male Podengo and very handsome – a true podengo with the bat-like ears! He also has a great temperament. He suffered a lot at the hands of hunters and eventually it is thought that after losing his scent on a hunt he got lost and was found hungry and thirsty. He is looking for a forever home.

  • Scooby Auction 15th May – Donations urgently needed

Scooby appeal banner 200 Dear friends,

It is hard to believe that this year will be our 3rd Scooby North America Auction. Actually, we are having 2 auctions this year. One in June and another in December. In the past two years, with your help we have raised enough money to help install a much-needed tile floor in the Hospital and Surgery Center and build numerous brick shelters in the paddocks at the Scooby Animal Refuge in Medina del Campo, Spain.

This year we are hoping that with your generosity we can build a much needed puppy house. The puppy house will be fully insulated, including the floor. There will be whelping boxes for mom and her pups and a doggy door for the mothers to use the outside areas before the puppies are ready. There will also be room for them to play and romp around and of course beds for them to sleep without always having to be under foot.

  • Crippled, abandoned, starved in Cadiz, podenco Nino needs foster and adopting home

Nino Cadiz 2 04 04 2011 250 Some years ago I met a small galga who was rehabilitated by Paul and April Carrier of Alpha Dog School, Rota, Cadiz – sadly victims of the recession. This galga had been confined to a small cage during her puppyhood to such an extent that she had curvature of the spine, resulting in a skippy walk – hence her name of Skippy. She was unsurprisingly a happy little galga in spite of her maltreatment as a puppy.

Here is another example of maltreatment, this time a little podenco. Here is the story of Nino, a small podenco found malnourished, abused and abandoned in Cadiz

  • Saving lives in Granada, more unwanted innocents

SPAP Granada 210 Sociedad Protectora de Animales y Plantas Granada is another refuge which struggles to cope with the abandoned dogs, cats and puppies in this huge metropolis and surrounding area. They too have podencos needing homes, please take a look at their website.

They are also able to take dogs and cats whilst people go on holiday or into hospital, details on the English website link.

  • Podenca Estrella, survivor of the Jaen killing station

Estrella and Angie in Jaen 190 I've fostered quite a few podencos, mostly the rough-haired type, from mainland Spain.  One of the most beautiful stories is that of Estrella.  In December 2009 I posted a picture on Galgo News of 3 galgas and a podenca in a cell in the killing station in Jaen.  Rescue of the 3 galgas was arranged but somehow the podenca was overlooked.  I received an appeal from across the ocean in Canada – the podenca is still in Jaen, can you get her out?

So the wheels were speedily set in motion and the podenca was rescued and taken to a refuge.  An association with whom I work closely, L'Europe des Levriers, then agreed to help get the podenca from Jaen to Madrid, from where I could collect her, along with other galgos we were bringing out to France for rehoming.  So there we were, at the beginning of February 2010, meeting up with Estrella – as the podenca had been named – to bring her home to foster.

  • Podenco Campanero – one of the big guys

Campanero 8 podencoworld 250 The Ibizan Campanero is not recognized by the FCI.  Researchers in Spain see, based on scientific research, the Ibizan Campanero as a race.  Certainly it is a large variation Podenco Andaluz.

The Ibizan Andaluz Podenco Campanero is one of large size with a shaggy white coat, he is seen by hunters as the jewel in the Ibizans because of his incomparable way of hunting.  The official standard of the large size pPdenco Andaluz states that the height to the withers for males is 54 to 65 inches and females 53 to 61 cm.  The Campanero has a smooth, compact construction, high intelligence, is noble, very sociable and always alert.

Campanero 4 podencoworld 250 To achieve a Podenco with a heavier build (skeleton) for hunting larger game, it is believed that in the distant past a Podenco was crossed with a Mastiff and the result was a Podenco Campanero. It is a lively dog with a balanced character, very loving, submissive, loyal and faithful to his boss.  This podenco type has an excellent sense of smell, does not tire quickly, is able to quickly search and is not intimidated. It is mainly used for hunting deer and wild boar.

“An ideal hunting companion, protector of the estate, a good companion in the solitude of the mountains, loyal to his last breath.”

  • Extremadura hunters – Fepaex says ‘Take Responsibility for your Dogs!

Extremadura hunter fepaex.org 02 2011 250 Podencos and galgos both suffer unimagineable cruelty at the hands of the Spanish hunters and gitanos – Spanish gypsies.  Most publicity comes from the regions of Andalucia and Murcia, as well as the Spanish Islands Ibiza and the Canary Islands.  However, the Spanish interior including the region of Extremadura is also hell on earth for galgos and podencos.  Here is a report from Fepaex – Federacion de Protectoras de Animales de Extremadura.

THE PROBLEM for  HUNTING DOGS  in EXTREMADURA =  Irresponsible HUNTERS + passive and complicit
