  • Gran Canaria, dogs starved to death – Seprona on the case

    The Guardia Civil Seprona Santa Maria de Guía (Gran Canaria), has accused a man of an alleged crime of animal abuse and neglect after an investigation and finding several dogs in poor condition. One of the officers who went to investigate, found two lofts, which was a strong odour.

    Upon entering the room he saw two podencos on chains. One of them was still alive, but emaciated due to malnutrition, probably because there was no trace of food and water around. A short distance away lay the body of another podenco,extremely thin in appearance and with several bite wounds, with clear signs of having been partially devoured. The Civil Guard found another dead dog, this time of the Boxer breed.

  • Podenco pups in a killing station! Anyone help?

I haven’t got much information, the email implies that they are in Jerez perrera in Cadiz, along with a handsome brindle year-old male galgo with an injured hind leg.   • 3 young podencos starving on the campo in Murcia – urgent help needed

    Puerto Real crop 250 30 06 2011 This poor bitch is one of three podencos abandoned close to the River (murcia). A boy who saw them and took the pictures said they look young, are skin and bones. Another man in the area is trying to shoot them. Please contact any of these people to find the exact area if you can help. With the heat, and without food and water in the middle of the campo, they will not last long.

  • Podenco x Frank needs veterinary care – please donate

    Tina Frank 250 06 2011 As with many small refuges, Galgos del Sol struggles for funding to pay for veterinary care and feed for their galgos and podencos. This is one of them, Frank, a podenco x found running up a motorway, starving and frightened. He is approx 1yrs old and fully vaccined and castrated. At present he is too thin. His bloods are negative for leishmania, erlichia and filaria. Frank has a serious food allergy which causes extreme diarrhoea, his pancreas has tested ok and he needs a special food diet. He’s now been taken into the vet clinic for further tests, including an endoscopy.

    This is going to cost 500 euros, a lot of money, if you can donate towards the cost of Frank’s vet fees, you will make a big difference to the life of this young dog. At present we are working with a vet to find a diet that suits him.

  • Ibizan Hounds help dementia sufferers – on Ibiza

    Ibizan Hound Central PAT dogs 250 Here is a fascinating article about the Ibizan Hounds on the island of Ibiza, some of which are being used as PAT (Pets As Therapy) dogs. In England my greyhound Molly was a PAT dog and we used to have great fun visiting a retirement home – folks used to love to talk about dogs they had owned, and Molly really enjoyed birthdays when she got to share the cake!

    The article also explains the other activities which young Ibizan Hounds can be trained for – search and rescue, agility and so on. Podencos – whatever type – are not just for hunting or simply a companion dog. Since they are active working dogs, using them for PAT, agility and so on can enhance your ownership of one of these fantastic dogs.

    There is a list of associations on Podenco Post which specialise in rescuing and rehoming podencos – please give a thought to offering one a forever home.

  • Beat the sandfly! New treatment for Leishmania – donate

    Leishmania is the third most important canine disease worldwide, caused by a sandfly. It bites an infected dog, then passes on the disease by biting another dog. It is diagnosed by blood test and, if caught soon enough, can be treated. Untreated, the dog will die. The disease is preventable by the use of a Scalibor collar (similar to a flea collar) but unfortunately these are expensive. Now there is a new cheaper alternative.

    Sighthound Welfare Trust have launched this appeal on behalf of Baas Galgo.
