    Gran Canaria podencas 250  5 2 2012Gran Canaria for winter sun holidays! Great! So long as you close your eyes to all the abandoned dogs and cats roaming the Island. These three podenca bitches have been in the camping/picnic area near Roque Nublo since November. The only survive on what they can retrieve from the visitors. A concentrated effort is being made to catch them but, as you can imagine, after all this time, it won’t be easy. TARA shelter on Gran Canaria sent the news. I’ve asked them to let me know if the podencas are caught. And if you go on holiday to Gran Canaria, go and see the shelter at Mogan, they are always pleased to see people interested in their work.

  • Podenco Canario Lelo – in Lincolnshire waiting for his forever home

    ‘This stunning boy has been returned to us after only 5 months in his ‘forever’ home – and not because of anything HE did wrong! The reason given by the family is ‘we couldn’t spend enough time with him as we have started extra duties at church.’

  • Podenca Canario Mami – saved from starvation on Gran Canaria

    Mami 1 Peter Pod 250 09 2011 It’s easy to overlook that the popular holiday desinations of Ibiza and the Canary Islands are also part of Spain. Whilst Ibiza is quite close to the mainland, the Canary Islands are down in the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa. Life on these islands is hard for the animals – many used by tourists – whilst hundreds of others are used for hunting. Luckily there are rescue associations picking up the pieces, but the only hope of a life for an animal outside an animal shelter or refuge is to be adopted on mainland Europe.

    This is the story of Mami, a Podenco Canario, whose mouth was taped up before she was dumped in the mountains on Gran Canaria, abandoned to a slow and painful death.

  • Portuguese Podenco Alf, with Aanifeira, have you a forever home?

    ALF[1]  190 Portuguese Podenco Aanifera July 2011 You recently read the tale of Sonia, an aged Podenga Portuguese who has been adopted in France to join other fellow pensioners with Betty.

    Look at this stunning boy! He is another Podengo Portuguese in the shelter in Aanifeira shelter in Portugal. Here is what Jackie, who works at the shelter, says.

    ‘Our shelter is located in the north of Portugal just 35 kms south of Porto and we have around 400 dogs in our care. We have a few podengos and in fact I thought I would attach a photo of one of ours called Alf.

She has her own website and she has also written a book about the Podencos, which concentrates on the podencos from Spain – from the organisations and the perreras.
