Here is the latest update on the 120 galgos, podencos, setters, pointers…all in an enclosure in Bullas, Murcia. Pro-Setter Spain are co-ordinating the rescue, Galgos del Sol in Murcia, along with three other associations, have already taken out 14 dogs. This year is the worst year yet for the Spanish hunting dogs.
Look at this cute little podenco, less than a year old, found wandering through a ravine with a broken tail and a femur fracture of a hind leg. The leg hung loose, like a rag doll’s leg. He was a skeleton, totally malnourished, with a sore eye and bore injuries on his nose and neck. He’s been called Aradio by his saviours.
The vet says Aradio has wandered for weeks with his leg dangling, possibly hit by a car. Understandably he was very scared of being caught but couldn’t run far with his injured leg.
This is a tale about a delightful little podenca named Bella, who is looking for her forever family. Bev Farmer takes up her story.
Bella has been tested for Leishmania, Heart worm etc and all negative; She has all her vaccinations, microchip and passport and can travel (to the UK if desired) from the 14th Jan.

Vivienne Wharton lives in Spain and is horrified with the terrible situation of abandoned dogs and cats. So she has just set up a group Animal Welfare Murcia. Here’s what she says.
‘I have no experience of writing to governments or campaigning. I only know I have a very strong urge to do something about the terrible situation in Spain, as I cannot bear what I see on an almost daily basis.
This little lady is Luna, She’s a podenca bitch, blind in one eye. Here’s what Tina of Galgos del Sol says about her. She is approx 5 mths old, super friendly and I was told originally lived with gypsies, then somehow ended up in a perrera. One of my helpers found out and I went and picked her up.’
What a great opportunity to adopt a young dog, maybe train her for agility? Certainly the young podencos respond really well to training.

Caramello, originally called Naranja, was living rough and very underweight. Local residents were feeding him until we could get to him. Although fairly easy to catch, getting him into the car to take to the vets was a different matter, he was so frightened.
Galgos del Sol in Murcia have just taken in this cute little podenca puppy, about 4/5 months old. Just look at those fabulous ears! She’s been named Lucia, a beautiful name for a beautiful baby.
