‘You think you have seen it all and then a dog like this arrives and breaks your heart all over again. Thank you to the kind person who didn’t just drive on past her. She has sustained serious trauma to the head, the most serious injury of which is a fractured skull. The injuries have happened a few days ago and the wounds are infected and there were maggots in them. The vet has cleaned up the wounds and administered pain killers, anti-inflammatory, antibiotics and she does have an IV to keep her hydrated. Obviously she will loose both of her eyes. We will see how she gets on over night.

Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Canary Islands on holiday, whether for summer sun or to escape the cold winters of the UK and Europe. Helping the Lanzarote podencos – why we do it
Rick Beauchamp is a volunteer for SARA Protectora on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. He helps rehome rescued podencos in the UK. He writes about why he does it.
Very often people ask us why we bother rescuing dogs from Lanzarote when there are so many homeless here in the UK?
Our answer I feel rarely convinces, as you have to see the suffering of the dogs to really appreciate why we feel that we have absolutely no choice but to try and help.
Recently we came across this article on the SARA website www.saraprotectora.org.
I have transferred the article verbatim as it adds to the poignancy. -
Canary Islands – these guys are looking to leave!
The Canary Islands Podencos need homes! SARA Protectora have some fabulous ones who wait and wait…and wait…Rick Beauchamp introduces you to some.
GUAPO NEEDS YOUR HELP Guapo was rescued from one of the “killing stations” on Lanzarote. He has been in SARA shelter since 23/3/2010, just over 5 years!!! He was only a very young dog when he was rescued, he is thought to be about 5 1/2 !! He is active and bouncy and loves other dogs. Hes a big lad too around 60 cm at the shoulders. An active chap like Guapo needs to be with a family, can anyone supply him with the love and kindness he so desparately needs? As with all the SARA dogs Guapo is neutered, microchipped and fully inoculated!
I am in the process of getting a consignment of dogs together so please message me if you can help Guapo or why not visit the SARA website www.saraprotectora.org and look at the other inmates,if you want further information on any one of them I’d gladly help. rick.beauchamp@express-recruitment.co.uk

Podenca Dina – born in kennels, looking for her forever home
DINA, there must be a home out there for her somewhere! This lovely lady is 8 months old, was born in to rescue and has spent most of her short life living in a kennel. She desperately wants a family of her own to show her what life is all about. She is a little jumpy and energetic but soon calms down. She is attending basic training classes and is doing really well.
She has a fantastic nature, very friendly and affectionate and she gets on great with other dogs and children.
She is in Lanzarote but we can organise and cover costs of transport if the right home is found. Please, let’s find her a forever home – NO DOG DESERVES TO GROW UP IN KENNELS.

Insuring your podenco – share your experience
On a recent post on my Podenco Post facebook page, a question was asked for help with insuring a podenco in the UK. Below I have posted the thread of the conversation. If any of you have experience which you can share, please do. (Each paragraph is a comment by a different person).
‘Some breed assistance with insurance please. Hope a Spanish Podenco three year old came from mainland Spain. Tesco pet insurance is classed as an Ibizan hound cost £12 month. Theo a Podenco Canario from Lanzarote, they want to class as a Cirneco dell’Etna same age cost £27 a month. They are now looking into matters but I suspect many of you are far more knowledgeable with the breed so any help you can give will be appreciated and any info on who you use to insure your poddies?

Podenca Amber – Lanzarote to UK – can you help?
Regular readers will know that I often mention the podencos waiting in the Canary Islands for forever homes, and that it is expensive to get them to the UK for rehoming. This is an appeal to ask if you can help towards getting this beautiful podenca to her forever home. Laura tells the story.
‘This is AMBER. She is an 18 month old female Podenco. She was found by holidaymakers and ended up in the dog pound. We went and met with them as they desperately wanted to take this beautiful girl home with them.
Plans were made and finances organised but sadly in the last 3 weeks a lot has changed.
