  • The Story of Izzy – happy ending for a failed podenco huntress

Izzy 3 170Michelle tells the story of how she came to offer a forever home to podenca Izzy.

‘It started with a photo. Not a great nor clear photo, but poignant and heart-breakingnever the less. It was of a tiny female Andalusian hound chained to a wall in a filthy Spanish cellar. No windows, no bed, just damp concrete to sleep on and a rusty dirt encrusted water bowl that was bigger than the dog.

The reason – she wasn’t good at hunting, and like many Spanish hounds in her position, she was thus regarded as trash. The luckier ones are rescued, but many are abandoned, hanged, burned alive, thrown down wells, or stabbed to death. She needed someone to offer her a home, otherwise she would most likely have suffered one of these fates.

  • From Perrera to Finca Podenco Friends, Murcia – meet Perla

Bev Farmer tells the story of Perla.

Perla arrived on Friday 35d July 2015 and we have given her some space but yet another Podenca terrified out of her mind. This is not fear from a change of circumstances, this is from a deeply rooted sustained abuse of some type. She will need many months of help and support to break her out of this world of terror she lives in.

In the last 3 months we have taken in 5 podencos all very similar issues and it cant be just because they are nervous by nature. Dogs learn by association the positive and the negatives and if treated badly for long enough, establish what hurts them is to be avoided.

  • Braveheart – ACTIN in action again

Valiente 1 250 14 5 2015Less than a week ago (May 2015) one of Actin’s team was contacted and asked to investigate this terrible case; a dog tied up on a chain in a hidden cave in a horrible town in Murcia where animals are treated like garbage…

On arrival they found this most pathetic and sad sight and because of what he suffered they named him Valiente, (Brave). Valiente attached to a short chain, old, skinny, sick and hardly able to move, the saddest of souls. He was about to give up, the rescuers were just in time to help him – before he succumbed to his life of misery.

Valiente is about 10 years old, so sad to think someone had him living this hell for all his life and caused him to be in such pain and endure such suffering. His condition as diagnosed by the vet; arthritis atrophy, osteoarthritis atrophy, cachexy, and sclerosis in the eye, amazingly he is not positive for leishmania.

  • Podenco Moreno – a hard life at the hands of a galguero

Bev Moreno 250 15 3 2015The story of Moreno, from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

For many months we have been talking with the local hunters to show them there is an alternative for the Podencos they no longer want or need. Last week they handed Moreno into our care. He needs a complicated surgery to try and save his front leg. This is from a fracture that happened over a year ago and was left to heal with no treatment. If gives him a lot of pain at the moment, he is just about terrified of everything. We are working with him to try and build a level of trust in us.

  • ACTIN on Perreras – making money out of killing dogs

Viv Wharton of ACTIN recently learned of a case where a pet dog was taken by the dog collector and ended up in the local perrera. Luckily the owners headed there as soon as they realised their dog was missing, and reclsimed it. What if this is happening in thousands of Perreras in Spain?

Viv writes. ‘There is a recession, little money for anyone, let alone Perreras and animals are the bottom of Spain’s list of priorities!! The council run ones get paid for every dog brought in and now many volunteers pay to get them out.
